Default Advice re. college for my son

I plan on sitting my daughter down at some point and shooting straight
with her. Something like, "you are a smart girl (she is), I want to see
you succeed. I send X amount of dollars (should be a lot with my chosen
career) to your mother every month. This amount is more than enough to
buy you clothes, food, and probably lots of stuff you want too. I have
informed your mother that she needs to save some of this money for your
college fund. If she doesn't, I will not be responsible for paying for
your college. I love you, but I cannot allow myself to be plundered
completely."

Just an FYI. Federal Direct Student Loans cap out at $10,000/year for
the freshman and sophomore year.

Thanks Beverly. I didn't know that and of course that could definitely
be a factor. It's also I think part of accepting the next stage of his
growth. It's just the other areas such as matters of drinking or drugs
and such didn't get all entangled with dead-beat CS issues. So it is
harder for me to give him advice and then watch him accept a financial
burden which I feel is morally wrong. But as Bob and others suggested,
my son my revisit this decision after a semester or two. Thanks again
all, for the comments and suggestions.

Why does your son have to go to an expensive private college? I don't get
it. His mother is not contributing to his college at all?

I paid for myself to go to college. My parents couldn't afford it and I
didn't want to rack up a bunch of student loans to get a degree.

Can your son go to a State University for two years and then if his grades
are good he can transfer to the private college for his final two years?
That will save you almost 1/2 the money.

He doesn't. He just wants to. I went to a state school (I know,
probably poor logic ;-) ) but I explained if he went to a state school
he could graduate with no student loans. But he didn't even apply.

His mother is not contributing to his college at all?

Actually a negative contribution....i.e. she is taking from money that
is meant for his college.

Don,

Dang, that sucks. I didn't realize you would have to pay CS until your son
turns 23!

He'll be drinking age before you stop paying child support!

Hang in there.

Without scholarships? I thought that was the first requirement for any kid
wanting to go to an expensive school--They *work* at it before application
time.
