Type II IUGR, seeking help...
Dear all,
SUMMARY: This query is to know what level of concern a pregnant women should be doing if she is detected Type II IUGR [intra uterine growth retardation] at 6 months of pregnancy. And to know if there is anythink we can do before entering into panic mode. IN DETAIL: My wife had her last sonography, which was at completion of her 6 months of pregnancy. And was remarked as 'Type II IUGR suspected' in sonography results. She did not experience any wait gain in about 20 days prior to this sonography and about 15 days after the sonography. Noting this observation and Type II IUGR suspicion results, doctor said that 'it is ok if there is no wait gain in this period'. And that 'there shall be further wait gain in the 7th month'. If we continue to see 'no wait gain' problems, then we shall have doses for to counter that effect or shall have to give glucose'. He did not wanted to go for those medicines as those have what he said as 'side effects'. The weight of baby predicted in this sonography was 900 gm, which others said is less than somewhat expected [we are Indians, so expected weights shall be less than Western standards and we two parents further are just 55 Kg and 42 Kg respectively] Doctoer further told us to do another sonography next week and wait for results thereof before concluding. We were however quite concerned because: 1 We thought he is not hurrying in making his observations and that next sonography which is 8 days ahead shall be late. 2 If these IUGR effect-reducing medicines do not work then he shall end us suggesting some critical step to us. And we would then have lost time before going to other doctor. 3 We think that sonography results may have their limitations in correctly bringing the gravity of IUGR, which may be higher than reported. Can anybody guide us if we should take a second opinion of another doctor in this regards at this stage of 6 months? Is 3-D sonography, which somebody recommended shall be able to show more results accurately ? Please let us know. We think time is running out for us. Thanks much for your time. - Anonymous ( ) |

Type II IUGR, seeking help...
God they scare the hell outta you! I had a serious IUGR with one of my sons
when pregnant, I had weekly sonograms to monitor his growth when they decided if he wasn't born he would die! So I agreed to the induction, which was a 48 hour ordeal (baby was stuck I begged the midwife to get a Dr but they refused) followed by a PPH, and my baby boy was 6lbs 4. He does now have problems, he had developmental delay, and apraxia which I am sure was caused by the birth. If I could go back in time I would have let nature take it's course, and I wouldn't have let the hospital frighten me into something I didn't want. -- Andrea mom of 5 - latest addition Kamron David 16lbs 2 (7lbs 9 and a half born). Type II IUGR, seeking help...
Hello Andrea,
Thanks for your experience. However, I may have slightly misunderstood your words. Can I take the summary as: "Doctors unnessesarily give you too much tension when in many cases of IUGR, there is no reason to be panicky?" I am condsidering that IUGR Type II would simply mean 'underweight baby' rather than anything more dangerous for baby----hopefully. Thanks anyway for your time. Regards. -Anonymous "Andrea" wrote in message ... God they scare the hell outta you! Type II IUGR, seeking help...
Hello Andrea,
Thanks for your experience. You're welcome. However, I may have slightly misunderstood your words. Can I take the summary as: "Doctors unnessesarily give you too much tension when in many cases of IUGR, there is no reason to be panicky?" Yes. In many cases IUGR is diagnosed by using sonagrams, which can be very inaccurate, as it was in our case. We were told our son would be 4lbs and would need special care, but her was induced 3 weeks early and was 6lbs 4 and stayed with me in a heated incubator for a few hours to warm him up after a traumatic delivery. That's not to say all cases are not serious. I am condsidering that IUGR Type II would simply mean 'underweight baby' rather than anything more dangerous for baby----hopefully. It stands for inter-uterine growth retardation, so it's poor growth and poor weight gain. Here is a useful webpage on the subject http://www.ccspublishing.com/journals_6a/iugr.htm Thanks anyway for your time. Yes. In many cases IUGR is diagnosed by using sonagrams, which can be very
inaccurate, as it was in our case. That's not to say all cases are not serious. equally sonograms can be unnecessarily reassuring, everyone who examined me was slightly concerned about the size of my baby, an ultrasound totally disagreed, placeing him on the 75th percentile. When he arrived he was 5lb 13oz, so small, but not too small (he arrived at 37+4, so smaller for gestation than Andrea's baby that everyone was so concerned about). I might be wrong, but it's not entirely the actual size that matters, but the rate at which it changes, as weight gain which slows, can mean placenta problems and be a genuine case of better out than in, but slow continuous growth can mean a small baby, but better in than out. |

Thanks Andreas and Anne for both of yours contributions.
