Compared to smallpox, diphtheria, etc. it was. In 1890
Great Britain "only" recorded 83 deaths from chicken pox.
The same number of deaths today from one infectious disease
would, I dare say, not pass without comment despite the
rather greater net population.

That "only" stands in relation to 6698 from scarlet fever,
5368 from diphtheria, 12225 from pertussis, 5011 from
"enteric fever," 18,434 from diarrheal disease, 1852 from
puerperal fever [1], 30 from rabies, 1566 from "dietetic
diseases" (primarily intemperance), etc.

Notable is the passage on cancer:
"Deaths ascribed to cancer, using that term as a general
designation for all malignant new growths, were 18,654
and in the proportion of 643 to a million persons living;
showing a further increase upon the ever growing rates
previously recorded."

Source: "Fifty-Second Annual Report of the Registrar-
General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England"

[1] Adding other "accidents of childbirth," maternal
deaths amounted to 4 per 1000 live births.

they were disguised smallpox deaths http://whale.to/vaccine/smallpox5.html

"In 1886, for instance, there were 275 cases of small-pox deaths altogether
throughout England and Wales; there was only one vaccinated child that died
from small-pox under ten years of age, but there were 93 children who died
from "chicken-pox." (Laughter.) And the Registrar-General, in commenting
upon the fact, declared that nearly, if not all those cases should have been
registered as small-pox, because chicken-pox "never kills "---Dr Hadwen MD

I see -- you prove that chicken pox "never kills" by redefining
chicken pox deaths (including those where the lesions extend
into the respiratory and central nervous systems) as something
else.

Then you say elsewhere that smallpox is harmless.
