"Little Mermaid" - non-Disney versions?
I posted this in rec.arts.movies.past-films, but they haven't
responded, so I thought I'd try here, if you don't mind. Well, I searched in Amazon and found a few. Trouble is, the reviews aren't always that descriptive and they're often sent to the wrong versions! 1=2E However, the 1970s Japanese/Tim Reid version IS apparently behind this deceptive cover: http://images.amazon.com/image=ADs/P...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg For the above, to see the actual style of anime in the contents, click here (it includes spoilers). Her name's Marina, there's a dolphin named Fritz, and it's about 70 minutes long. I've seen it - pretty good and sad. http://www.radish-spirit.com/c=ADbl/...1/anim=ADe.htm 2=2E Then there's this one - 1990s? I can't trust these dates. It MAY have an ecological theme. She's called Miranda and has an otter friend. http://images.amazon.com/image=ADs/P...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg 3=2E And this one-also 1990s? http://images.amazon.com/image=ADs/P...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg The reviews imply it has the original ending, but they're nasty, except for this one - hope the names are correct. "Leana the little mermaid wants to meet a hansome prince and to the surprise of her talking pet dolphin Binks she does and shes in love prince Stephen so she make a deal with Casandra the sea witch trading her voice for a pair of legs, and meets two birds Cecil and Claudia,then... well see for your self." 4=2E And finally, there's the 30-minute Reader's Digest 1975 version with the original ending and Richard Chamberlain as the narrator - I already saw that and I love it. The animation is better than the Tim Reid version, IMHO. You can see a picture of the cover here, but you have to scroll to the bottom. http://www.richard-chamberlain=AD.in.../Narrator.html Contrary to what the Internet Movie Database says(1987), I KNOW it's from before 1977 because I saw it on TV back then! Sometimes it's on the same video as "The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant." So, to get back to the question, who has seen 2 and 3? Do they have the original ending? Are they any good? Thanks. Lenona. P=2ES. Check out this review from Amazon - I believe it's for #1. It makes me sad, but my kids love it, October 10, 2000 Reviewer: A viewer When my oldest daughter (now 20 years) old was little, she loved this movie and always wanted to check it out from the video store, even though she cried buckets at the end every time. The movie is so intense that it always me, an adult, heartsick, too! When the Disney version came out, I was so relieved that the mermaid survived at the end. Unfortunately, my youngest child, a boy, loves this movie as much as my oldest daughter did and begs me to rent it! It's hard to find at video stores, so I guess I'll have to buy it at last, even though it still makes me sad to see it! I guess that's the mark of a good animated video -- it touches adults as well as kids. |

I don't know about 2 & 3, but I did see #1 in the theater when I was 7, back
in 1977. So when the Disney version came out, I was a bit disappointed they changed the story so much (but Disney is notorious for doing that to many classical stories, so I shouldn't been surprised). Then I found the 1977 version on eBay and bought it. It's one of my daughters' favorites. ~Peggy wrote in message oups.com...
