Irish National BF Week
Or is it all over the world as well? It is here, and there was just a
radio show on about bf'ing...mainly, in public. The co-host of the show had a child, and bf'ed, and went through the first few weeks of hell, but it sounded like she perservered and all was good. And good on the Irish...most of the calls were totally supportive (and a couple Americans in there too...we should start a club here!) The statistics said that the rate in Norway was 98%, and in Ireland it's 37%. I don't know where the stats came from, a course. I only jumped in the last hour of the show. Marie and Jean, it was on Spin 103.8. -- 'Tis Herself |

The reason it's this week is because this is the 41st week of the year. And good on the Irish...most of the calls were totally supportive (and a couple Americans in there too...we should start a club here!) The statistics said that the rate in Norway was 98%, and in Ireland it's 37%. I don't know where the stats came from, a course. I only jumped in the last hour of the show. There's a cool ad in the Indo today quoting those stats. Hold on while I run out to the car and get it .... ..... OK, it's picture of a woman's body between the neck and shoulders wearing a babydoll type T-shirt. Across the chest is "The healthiest milk available, see inside for details" :-). The blurb underneath reads "Breastmilk gives your baby the best start in life, providing all of the nutrients your baby will need to grow strong and healthy. Protecting against a wide range of infections and illnesses too, long after you stop bfing. No other baby milk can do this. It also gives mothers some protection against beast and ovarian cancer and oseoporosis, as well as helping them to get their figure back faster. Altogether, it's proof that the healthiest milk you can give your baby is your own. For information contact your GP, PHN, midwife, LLLI or Cuidiu-ICT bfing support group. www.healthpromotion.ie/breastfeeding" Then in bold type, "There are reasons why breast is best". The Government is finally getting its act together. I'm going to scan it in - I'll send a copy to anyone who's interested. Marie and Jean, it was on Spin 103.8. Don't listen to Spin, I'm a Today FM gal. But I did my bit by bfing my 15mo twice at a funeral this afternoon, even if my mother and grandmother did try to shield me. Jean -- HOLLY: Nothing wrong with dog's milk. Full of goodness, full of vitamins, full of marrowbone jelly. Lasts longer than any other type of milk, dog's milk. LISTER: Why? HOLLY: No bugger'll drink it. Plus the advantage of dog's milk is when it goes off it takes exactly the same as when it's fresh. LISTER: Why didn't you tell me, Holly?! Hold on while I run out to the car and get it .... Thanks for typing that all in. It was pretty wild to listen to, but there were some folk (guys) who said "I don't want to see that". Some women too. But one guy called up and said that he wishes he saw it more, not so he could see "ditties" (his word), but cause it's the right thing to do. The Government is finally getting its act together. I'm going to scan it in - I'll send a copy to anyone who's interested. The Gov...HA! They just have such a long long way to go to make it work, I think. You know what I mean...it's so far down on their list of priorities. Don't listen to Spin, I'm a Today FM gal. But I did my bit by bfing my 15mo twice at a funeral this afternoon, even if my mother and grandmother did try to shield me. I'd never listened before, it was on at my friend's place up the road, and I ran home to listen. I was texting them like mad with comments (the one time my phone acts funny too!! I think they called me to see what i had to say!!), a few of which they used. I've been into Radio 1 lately, just for the talk... I can't believe they shielded you...argh. -- 'Tis Herself |

The reason it's this week is because this is the 41st week of the year. What does that have to do with it? Well pregnancy is 40 weeks long so the 41st week is when mother and baby are starting to bf :-). Actually, the stats are in an article on how bfing mothers miss less workdays. http://www.unison.ie/irish_independe...055904&issue_i d=9868 You'll have to register to read it but it's free. The Gov...HA! They just have such a long long way to go to make it work, I think. You know what I mean...it's so far down on their list of priorities. It's a start at least, and takes the emphasis off all the other crap they're going through atm :-). I can't believe they shielded you...argh. They tried to :-). My grandmother kind of sat leaning forward beside me the first time. She did bf all 6 of hers in the (eldest born 1944, youngest 1963) but she would be very much of the "you don't talk about it" school. My mother just has issues with bfing an older baby/toddler but I've called her on it often enough that she knows that I'm not going to give in. Jean -- HOLLY: Nothing wrong with dog's milk. I never thought to listen to the radio today. I was watching Open House and saw no mention of it, I wonder if TV3's morning show did anything, I must try to remember to watch tomorrow and if they don't we should text them! But I did my bit by bfing my 15mo twice at a funeral this afternoon, even if my mother and grandmother did try to shield me. I chop and change depending on the music, the only talk shows I take in are Gerry Ryan and Ryan Tubridy and that's only the occasional time. I'm feeling bold tonight I think I might stick on Adrian Kennedy and text in that they should discuss bf for the week that is in it. I wimped out of bf in front of our guests at the Christening, but it was mainly due to all the men present! I went upstairs and fed Liam in my bedroom, but it was nice to get a few mins time out :-) Funny thing is my 12 yr old bro and 16 yr old nephew were up there playing Playstation and they just went about their business with their backs to me and not blinking an eyelid!! Lol! It was nice though to get everybody chatting about how I am 'still' feeding him, and isn't he huge and aren't I great. Even for my relations that never bf they were chatting about how they are sorry now they didn't stick out the difficult part right at the beginning and my SIL said she's going to consider giving it another go. My single friends think it's great but icky!! But I am taking it upon myself to educate them. -- Marie Mum to DD born March '98, DS#1 born Nov '99 and DS#2 born Aug '03 This email address doesn't exist anymore Please reply on ng or if you know me you know my email address! |

Actually, the stats are in an article on how bfing mothers miss less workdays. http://www.unison.ie/irish_independe...055904&issue_i d=9868 You'll have to register to read it but it's free. I'll be blatant: Breast is best for working mums WORKING mothers who breastfeed are three times less likely to be absent from work because their children are healthier, new research shows. Health Minister Micheal Martin said studies show just 37pc of Irish mothers breastfeed - one of the lowest in the world when compared to Norway (98pc) and the US (64pc). However, Launching National Breastfeeding Week he conceded there was an "incompatibility" between the continuation of breastfeeding and a mother's economic need to return to work. The promotional campaign comes against a background of new guidelines recommending that after six months a mother should continue to combine breastfeeding and solids "until the age of two years or beyond". Breastfed babies are less likely to be hospitalised with gastroenteritis, chest, ear or urinary infections. Mr Martin said the new Maternity Protection Bill, which is at second stage, would allow mothers to take breaks and express milk in the workplace. Eilish O'Regan Health Correspondent ---- Okay, I didn't know about the bill...that's pretty good. And the Equality law thing (I can't remember the proper name) supposedly makes it so if we're in a public place nursing, no one can kick us out... It's a start at least, and takes the emphasis off all the other crap they're going through atm :-). grumble, grumble Yeah...okay..... They tried to :-).
