New River company to launch ADHD drug

The headline writer for this story could pen, "Company loses nearly $30
million, twice as much as the year before."

But there's something more to consider about the 2005 financial results for
Radford drugmaker New River Pharmaceuticals Inc., released last week.

While it lost a small fortune, it is gearing up to launch its first product,
which is expensive. Research, product development and compensation costs
drove a 109 percent rise in losses -- to $29.9 million, or 83 cents a share.

Meanwhile, although New River has no sales, it reaps huge payments from a
partnership designed to share the costs and income from the first-product
release. New River finished 2005 with $52.8 million in cash and short-term
investments. In February, it collected $50 million from the partnership
deal, its second payment that size.

New River's year is steeped in expectations, because it awaits the green
light from the Food and Drug Administration to launch NRP104, a treatment
for children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Beyond that, it
has identified three other drugs in its pipeline.

Shares of New River, which trade as NRPH on the NASDAQ, closed Tuesday at
$32.14, down 61 cents.

Consulting the legal Dept. concerning Jan Drew wouldn't be a bad idea.
