Magical Bl**dy Solids (Vent)
Oh it's the answer to everything - "when he's on solids it will right
itself" - particularly with Health Visitors. I called yesterday cos DS has been waking up over the past few weeks screaming with chronic wind (30 weeks old now) and can't go back to sleep til he's almost purmped his pants off - and nursed for comfort. I asked for advice. I got "try increasing his fluids intake". We feed every 2 hours during the day and 4/5 hourly at night. I told them that. So then it was "Well could you mix orange juice with his food?" Huh? He's still exclusively b/f. My reply - he won't yet take a sippy cup (only if it's empty!!!). "Well mix it with his baby rice". HE'S NOT ON SOLIDS. "Oh well, when he is it will all right itself. He's over four months old isn't he?". Ye gods!!! In the meantime I guess they'd like us to just ride it out eh? Now that I've finished ranting, do you guys have any ideas? My diet hasn't changed (not even allowing for Xmas) and I can't link it to any specific food. --Alison |

When are you going to try solids? 30 weeks is over 6 months isn't it?
Am I doing my math wrong? I am just curious because if solids do fix it, you wouldn't have to ride it out for long. Sorry I don't have constructive advice besides that though because my babies never seemed bothered by gas even when they had alot of it. I have heard of people using mylicon though. The baby is 30 weeks that means the baby is almost 7 months right (why do people continue to use weeks after the baby is a month old?) So you don't want to start solids at this point? Is there a reason for that? It seems like he is doing too many frequent feeds for a 7 month old, but what do I know, two of my three girls were eating solids at that point. I have no clue about why he has gas. Sometimes babies *and* adults are just more gassy on some days than usual. It isn't something that I would worry too much about really unless the baby was really unhappy for a long period of time. Try burping more, use gripe water if it continues to be a problem. Since the baby isn't on solids yet, I would guess it was something you ate, but not necessarily. But yes, citrus is not really recommended, not from an allergy standpoint, but more because it can cause rashes. I have to say too though that my girls were introduced to a sippy cup at six months. I would put some water in it or ebm or formula when I ff and they loved it. YMMV on that though. -- Sue (mom to three girls) I'm Just a Raggedy Ann in a Barbie Doll World... |

FWIW Fennel is supposed to be good for wind, so is it worth a try you drinking fennel tea to see if any of it gets to him? teapot |

Hey now, my 11 month old still eats eery 2 hours during the day. In fact, a
lot of babies don't stop that until after a year. It's normal though, and not harmful... and no solid introduction DOESN'T help. In fact, I think it made him nurse more often, and made him stop sleeping through the night. Ours in fantastic, very strongly supportive of breastfeeding, didn't push solids 'til ds was ready (he had his first taste 1 week before he was 6 months). She's not always had the same knowledge as I've got from other sources about what foods to give when, but then no source agrees with another. I find it particularly useful to be able to ring her to check about whether I should take ds (or myself) to the doctor. |

Yep, hence my "what do I know" because my babies didn't eat that often when they were that age. I don't find it very common around here that older babies are still nursing every two hours. I'm sure you find it hard to get anything done, yeh? I never said it was harmful, but I wouldn't care for it. -- Sue (mom to three girls) I'm Just a Raggedy Ann in a Barbie Doll World... |

Caterpillar is about the same age (7.5 months), and she's been *really* gassy for the last month or two. She only gets solids once a week or so (lazy mom), so I don't think that's related. We just give her lots of gas drops. No good advice, but lots of sympathy. Phoebe -- yahoo address is unread; substitute mailbolt |
