I'm in the UK and it whilst I don't recall it being taught at school, it was certainly something I was aware of from school age. In the news here reports about it are more related to the vast number of pregnancies that are not planned and there are discussions about putting it into bread, so that even those people get it. Im in the USA I think in the US the folic acid campaign started later than in the UK. I believe the ethnic group with the highest incidence of ntd s are the Irish. I remember reading some article about how their was research being done in the UK, and that is where fa was discovered to have a very good effect on lowering the incidence. I've read a lot of stuff, though, and I could be wrong. My brain isn't what it used to be. LOL It now exists in a notebook mostly. I dunno either. I knew you had to take vitamins, but didn't know it was supposed to be _beforehand_ too. |

I knew you had to take vitamins, but didn't know it was supposed to be _beforehand_ too. Yep. 400 mcg (or 0.4 mg) of folic acid a day is recommended for all women of child-bearing age as a daily supplement. Many cereals and breads are being fortified with fa, but the easiest way to make sure you're getting it is to take a multi vitamin for women or just a folic acid tablet alone. My first was born with clubfoot, and she had a sacral dimple. I was taking 800 mcg of fa a day, and eating a bowl of cereal that was fortified, prior to conception of Grant, but for some reason (multifactorial) my body didn't assimilate the supplement. -- Joy Rose 1-99 Iris 2-01 Spencer 3-03 Grant 9-05 www.caringbridge.org/visit/grantphilip |

supposed to be _beforehand_ too. maybe the trend in taking vitamins confuses matters, in the UK it's not advised by doctors to take vitamins during pregnancy, it's not that they are saying stop if you already do, it's just not one of thing things that you are supposed to do. So it makes the taking of folic acid much more clear cut and advertised, marketed, whatever the word in a totally different way because taking a supplement isn't such a normal thing to do. "Nicole" wrote in message ps.com... New here, I had a baby boy 4 months ago who had anencephaly a fatal NTD and he lived for 33 hours. Will be trying to concieve again in about 6 months.Right now am on high dose 4 mg folic acid. For those who dont know taking at least 400mcg folic acid everyday for 3 months BEFORE conception can reduce the chances of having a baby born with a ntd like anencepahly or spina bifida by up to 70-80%. Nicole Warm hugs Nicole. I am so sorry for your loss. Welcome to the group and best of luck in your current attempts to conceived. Carl |
