Default Spotting in early pg

Hi everyone, i just found this message board a few days ago and have been
reading and reading and reading....wow! lots of great info in here! I am 34
and newly pg with #1 (my husband and I ttc'd for 7 months). I've never been
pg b4 and I have had a few incidences of spotting which to be honest, scare
the daylights out of me! I had some on the day my AF would have arrived
(i've heard this is very common), and then 1 week later i had a small bit
again (both times brown). And then almost 2 weeks later (just this past
Sunday), i had a substantial amount that i would describe as more of a
"spill" than spotting (still brown, and not wet enough to stain thru
undies - sorry for the TMI!!!). Nothing Monday or Tuesday, and then today,
just a 'trace' amount of brown spotting. People tell me its normal, and then
other people tell me "oh, i never had any spotting in my
pregnancies".......... WHY is this happening to me?? What causes this? Why
doesn't it happen to everyone?

I feel so neurotic....... its all new to me and i just so desperately want
to stay pregnant. Does anyone else have stories of spotting during
pregnancies that turned out fine? how long did it last? Looking for
information............. tx!!! Rose

Hi Rose, welcome and congrats!

Spotting can scare the hell out of you, I've BTDT, and to feel the
way you do about it is perfectly OK. I spotted from week 5 to week 10,
in all colours, but never really bloody. The medics never found a cause
and I was told most likely it is cervical bleeding. The veins in the
cervix can be very tender at this stage, and break at the slightest
pressure, which occurs if you have a bowel movement, or lift heavy
things. It is totally harmless.

If it turns into regular bleeding, and you get menstrual like cramps
with it, then you should call a doctor immediately. There isn't much
they can do to stop it, but it can turn into a life threatening situation
for you if you miscarry and not all tissue is removed.

The spotting in my case was almost continuous, but at 8.5 weeks an
u/s was done which confirmed a healthy embryo with strong heartbeat.
If you get really nervous, find a midwife or OB/GYN to have a check
done. It's expensive, but worth the reassurance. Don't do it too early
though: at 7.5 weeks they didn't see a thing, and that is really scary!

I had brownish spotting for the first two weeks or so of my pregnancy. It
started before I even had the positive pregnancy test and the reason I took
the test instead of just thinking my period was starting was because I
*felt* pregnant and I decided I'd rather know that I had been pregnant and
was having a miscarriage, than be oblivious. I was so convinced that
something bad was happening that I almost didn't tell DH that the test was
positive. Anyway, my experience was that I would have almost a *gush* of
brown (that did go through my undies), followed by several days of constant
brown streaks after using the bathroom. I also had two episodes of pinkish
red spotting--once after intercourse (we then abstained for about 6 weeks
because of paranoia) and once after an internal exam. Both of those episodes
were followed the next day by one of the gushes I mentioned and then the
streaking (I would imagine the following days were all old blood from the
initial "trauma" to cervix causing the pink spotting). Anyway, after 6 weeks
they stopped. I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks that showed a happy little
beating heart. Now I'm 32 weeks along with a very kicky little guy, so all
was well. I remember well the cold, stark *fear* of seeing the spotting
though. It was awful and I felt like I was in a horrible limbo. It took me
until I felt the baby moving before I was able to feel secure with the
pregnancy--those early episodes had me fairly convinced that the pregnancy
was doomed.

Best wishes to you! I remember how awful it feels to be wondering/worrying
all the time (mixed in with gleeful bits of hopefulness and excitement!).

With my first, I was probably about 18 weeks pg, when
after a movie, while on vacation, I went to the bathroom
and when I went to wipe, the tp was full of blood and
was the same many wipes after that. Ended up in the
ER overnight. They couldn't find anything, although
the idiot doctor told me it was possible I was having
a "spontaneous abortion..." not a miscarriage but a
abortion... talk about ****ing me off. I had quite
a few other similar bleeding instances over the next
couple months... what I was finally told was that I
must have had a blood vessel close to the surface of
my cervix that would bleed... told to avoid sex
and exercise. I eventually figured out that everytime
I would do squats (as recommended in my Bradley
training), I would bleed. I quit doing the squats
and all was well. My son is now a bouncy 15 month old.

It was certainly scary though!

He didn't mean to upset you. That's just medical term.

I know that she didn't mean to upset me, I just feel that
the term "spontaneous abortion" is unfeeling to a woman
who desires her baby. The word abortion to me
conontates (spelling???) a choice and this wasn't a choice
I was making. Why not use miscarriage???

Regardless, this idiot doctor (on call doctor who didn't
even bother the come to the hospital so check my condition
until the morning, more than 12 hours after the bleeding)
was wrong!

I know a guy in the medical field who calls babies "self terminating
tumors". Lovely.

Just remember, that not all people in the medical field have a great
bedside manner.

I am 8 weeks pg, and have been having spotting on and off since week 6. This
past week had brown spotting almost every day. I went to the doctor in a
panic on Friday and he did an internal exam, saying that my cervix felt fine
(firm & closed), indicating that I may have completed a m/c already, or that
more likely I still have a viable pg. I went for an u/s this morning, and
all was well, baby is growing and there was a strong h/b! The doc also said
that spotting and all kinds of discharges (i also had some sticky stringy
stuff coming out with a tinge of brown blood - sorry for the TMI! just
wanted to share incase others have the same and are equally as worried as i
was!) are very common and not generally problematic for pregnancies. Guess
all we can do is wait and see - the baby is hanging in there!

Congrats on seeing the heartbeat, Donna! It is a wonderful moment. I, too,
had early spotting during my pregnancy and remember well how absolutely
wonderful it was to see that little blinking heart at my 7 week ultrasound.

Welcome to the group as well :-)
