Default IN regards to Hypertrophic tonsils, enlaged adenoids/polyps

So it seems that Abby's tonsils are so large they touch in th eback,
she has been diagnosed with large adenoids also.
They want to operate and remove it all.
IS there any one here with any experience in this?

I hate the thought of her being in post recovery.
The hurting and pain...
SHe snores at night, but not always.
She talks like she has a thick tongue, but she does very well, they say
that it will improve her speach after she recovers.
THey say it also causes some blocking in the ears and she will hear
better.
I have never noticed problems with her hearing, just her paying
atttention sometimes...

My wife wants to procede and I don't want them to cut into my baby
girl, I have not really seen her suffer at all because of this
hypertrophy, but yet I feel it could help, but I keep going back to the
pain and me looking at her at home getting better.
Then there is the fear of something going wrong during the operation.

Did I mention my wife wants to give her the promissed advantages of the
operation?
I would like to give her the advantages also... but something is
holding me back... I feel I am missing the big important point that
would make me make a more definate choice.

I need more input.

ANy would be appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know much about the tonsil side of the issue. Swollen
adenoids and blocked ears - BTDT.

Has the audiologist given you a picture of her hearing impairment
(frequency vs sound level)? Does she have any signs of sleep apnea
or other sleep deprivation?

My parents didn't notice the hearing loss. My sister's teacher did -
we read lips to compensate. (My kindergarden teacher also missed it
since there was a hearing impaired student on the other side of the
classroom and I was good at asking my neighbors.)

My sister's hearing impairment was such that mom heard the tone
without any reaction from the child on her lap (with Sandra wearing
the big bulky headphones).

My adenoidectomy was done at age 6 (summer after diagnosis) with
a myringotomy (tubes to lay-people). Even with therapy for several
years afterwards, I still read lips most of the time to ensure
I "heard" things correctly. My recovery was totally uneventful -
I don't remember any pain. (The clearest memories I have are from
the recovery room - my surgery was done first and the nurses
placed my sister in the bed with me in the recovery room.) The
post-surgery hearing tests should no impairment (but obviously
my ear-eye-brain connection was set by then).

I hope this helps somewhat.

(mom had known enough stubborn "I can't hear you" pre-schoolers that
she only spoke to her children when she had our attention (eye contact)
which explains how she missed it. Our vocabulary increased at a normal
pace even with the impairment.)

Not sure there is an imparement.
The doc said she may be mixing up sounds that are close together, but I
have not seen it.
Ok, so her and her brother say Dophlin instead of dolphin, but a lot of
kids mix up some letters in a word.
Just yesterday we had a kid over from daycare that says shintzel
instead of shnitzel. ( hebrew for breadded, fried chicken breast)
Lots of kids do that.
Pasghetti comes to mind also
We are going to have hearing checked.
As for the Apnoea, I have not noticed any side effects, she is not
cranky or groggy during the day, she plays well and has a mellow
demeanor. she does not wake frequently at night, she pays attention
during story time and movie time. She does not wet her bed. none of the
classic signs.
She was in bed with us this am ( sometimes they wake up around 6 and
come into bed, it is ok, with us) and the wife pointed out 2x where she
thinks Abby stopped breathing, but it was just a rest between breaths (
I have been in touch with the SLeep Apnoea foundation, they count
Apnoea episodes as any cessation of breathing for 10 seconds, not 1.5)
I want to have all these tests done before we do surgery, but the
doctors say just the fact that she has a mild speech impediment (
talking with what sounds like a thick/slow tongue), that she snores,
and just the fact that her tonsils touch and close off the airway
partially at night is enough reason.

Her brother is a lot quicker to get angry or sad or cry than she is and
he has no problems, so....

I guess we will do the tests before and hopefully after to see exactly
what the results are.

I am not so sure how her hearing is affected, she understands
everything we ask and say, the only problem is sometimes she does not
pay attention. I am sure she is not the only kid like that her age.
But the tests will see further the extent of the problem is there is
any.

I just do not feel comfortable cutting into a healthy girl of 3 years
old....

It is the way god made her.

I dunno.....

It does help, thank you Cindy. I know she will not remember much of the
recovery when she is doen with it, just that week being home with her
while she hurts.....

You're welcome. See what the test results give you (do they
do sleep studies on 3 year olds?). Talk to the specialists
and then decide. (I still remember Dr Oberhand (Ear, Nose and
Throat) and the hospital routine - they had (even in 1976) a
good pre-surgery explanation of the events to help calm
nervous children. It's easier to remember the pre-surgery
time and follow-ups than most of the immediate recovery time.)
