Default Gray poop?

I'm sure this is a really stupid question, but if I knew the answer, I
wouldn't ask, now would I?

I was helping out in the nursery at church this morning, and had to change
one of the other babies' poopy diaper. I was really surprised to see that
her poop was *gray* - it looked exactly like wet clay, both in color and
consistency. I know that's not the norm for breastfed babies, but I didn't
think it was the norm for formula-fed babies, either.

Baby drinks Good Start (mom is really biological grandmother who adopted),
and based on her age is probably eating a fair amount of solids. From what
I know about her mom, she breastfed her bio kids, so it's possible that she
doesn't know much about ff babies either. But I didn't want to ask her what
was up with the gray poop if it was a normal thing and I'm just ignorant.

Anyone here have a baby with gray poop?

Phoebe

No, but ff babies' poops can be odd colors ;-)
My ds had bright lime green poo one time.... he was breastfed, but I
traced this poo back to white grape juice.
Hehe, imagine my shock at opening his diaper and seeing that!

If I remembering correctly I think bonnie has had a grey poop or 2 in her
life along with the interesting greenish swirls and the yellow ones and the
stinky runny brown Could it have been the iron from the formula I think
that is what I attributed her greyish green ones to.

Yesterday as a matter of fact. Turns out banana and hummus mixed together
produce it. Who'da thunk it? Now, my guess is that if the whole of the
diaper content was grey something was off.

DS sometimes has this when he is teething. We've noticed at least four
times now that gray poop will result in two more teeth within a couple of
days. We mentioned it to his ped, who said that gray poop is not good if
it is persistent, but didn't believe the correlation with teething.

If the baby has gray poop on a regular basis, this can point to a problem
in the liver, as the brown colour comes from discarded red blood cells
which are taken care off by the liver (that's what the ped told us). So it
is definitely something to keep an eye on.

HTH!

BTW: how are your girls doing? The caterpillar must be growing up quite
some bit now. Do I recall correctly she was born on my b-day, May 31?

Yes, that's what I meant - it was as if someone had put a ball of wet clay
in an otherwise clean, dry diaper.

Thanks! I think I will ask her mom about it the next time I see her.

Yep. Two more weeks and she'll be one *sniff*. She's a tall, tall skinny
girl - 30.75 inches (78cm) and 18 pounds, 1 ounce (8.2kg) at 11 months. She
walks very well, has no teeth, has no words, and ate all but 2 bites of a
banana mini-muffin (5 makes a normal muffin) for lunch today, which is the
most she ever eats of anything. She also nurses a million times a day and
at least twice a night, but I hate to discourage nursing until she gets back
on the weight-for-height charts.

Yeah, O Boy's was only one of several clumps that was grey.

Sounds like she is doing just fine in her own way. I have quite a
lot of friends having babies, and it is amazing to see how different
they all develop. The first year really flies by, doesn't it? Before you
know it she'll be talking back and you wish she were still the quiet
little girl she's now Way to go on the nursing!!
