Songs with gestures
Hi,
My 22-month old is crazy about songs with gestures (I don't really know how else to call them), like Wheels on the bus, itsy-bitsy spider... However, I am running out of songs! Do you know of a video or DVD that could teach me new songs? I need to learn the music, lyrics and movements, therefore a tape or cd wouldn't do. I borrowed a few sign-along videos from the library, but they are not "tutorial" enough for me - they are intended to entertain the kid. TIA Leah in Florida |

Not specifically, but I do know one that my kids loved -- and we still like singing it... "Rattlin' Bog" (you can find a MIDI file for it on www.mudcat.org) refrain O, roll the rattlin bog, the bog down in the valley-o O, roll the rattlin bog, the bog down in the valley-o (roll your fists over each other, arms in front of you) In that bog there was a tree, a rare tree, a rattlin' tree (raise both arms up like you're a tree, waggle arms a little) Tree in the bog, and the bog down in the valley-o (roll fists) repeat refrain On that tree there was a limb (raise one arm out, palm up), a rare limb a rattlin' limb (shake arm a little) Limb on the tree, tree in the bog (raise both arms) and the bog down in the valley-o (roll fists) repeat refrain On that limb, there was a branch (raise one arm out, palm down) a rare branch, a rattlin' branch (shake arm) Branch on the limb, limb on the tree, tree in the bog and the bog down in the valley-o (repeat all prior motions) repeat refrain On that branch, there was a twig (raise one arm out and point index finger), a rare twig, a rattlin' twig (waggle finger) Twig on the branch, branch on the limb........ (repeat all prior motions and sequence of words) repeat refrain On that twig, there was a nest (raise arm out, palm up and cup hand like you're holding something), a rare nest, a rattlin' nest (yes, shake hand g) Nest on the twig, twig on the branch....(repeat all prior motions and sequence of words) repeat refrain In that nest, there was an egg (raise arm out, hand in a fist), a rare egg, a rattin' egg (shake fist). Egg in the nest, nest on the twig, twig on the branch (you get the idea g) On that egg there was a bird (both arms out, like you're making birds' wings), a rare bird, a rattlin' bird (flap your wings) Bird on the egg, egg in the nest, nest on the twig (yadda, yadda, yadda g) repeat refrain On that bird, there was a feather (same like you just did for the bird, but with two fingers pointed out on each hand), a rare feather, a rattlin' feather (waggle fingers on each hand) Feather on the bird, bird on the egg..... (feels like it goes on forever, doesn't it? g) repeat refrain twice and head towards your big, dramatic finish! Once you get the hang of it, your toddler will soon follow along (the motions are pretty easy)...and even without the motions, it's a great song for car trips. Leah ______ In Memory of David, 11/10/61 - 5/21/03 Beloved Husband, Father, Heart's Companion (There are actually more verses, but that should be enough to keep a toddler happy VBG) I borrowed a few sign-along videos from the library, but they are not "tutorial" enough for me - they are intended to entertain the kid. "Rattlin' Bog" (you can find a MIDI file for it on www.mudcat.org) I used to do "There were 10 in the bed" There were 10 in the bed and the little one said Roll over, roll over (spin hands around each other) And they all rolled over (spin hands again) and one fell out. (hold up one finger). Proceed with 9, 8, etc When you get to 2 in the bed, the last verse goes There were 2 in the bed and the little one said roll over, roll over And the both rolled over and one fell out There was 1 one in the bed and the little one said Good night!! There's also patty cake of course, and ride a cock horse. grandma Rosalie |

Songs with gestures
Oh Mr Sun, Sun, Mr Golden Sun , please shine down on me!
Oh Mr Sun, Sun, Mr Golden Sun, hiding behind a tree.... These little children are asking you, to come on out and play, oh Mr Sun , Sun, Mr Golden Sun, please shine down on me! (Raffi) Oh...plant a watermelon on my grave and let the juice soak through! The Chicken Dance! I see the moon, the moon sees me, the moon sees the one that I want to see. Please let the light that shines on me, shine on the one I love. Over the mountains, over the sea, back where my heart is longing to be, Please let the light that shines on me, shine on the one i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. (gesture appropriately). We do.. there was one in the bed and the little one said *I'm lonely, please come back* I have a prop I use made from a file folder - you make a half wheel with 10 little bears on it and use a brad to attach it to the file folder. You draw the bed on and staple some material as the covers so that the wheel can move under the covers by turning the brad. You or the child can make the bears go under the covers as they sing about it rolling out of the bed and then when the last one is under, you can quickly make all the other bears come back when you sing *I'm lonely* in a little sad bear voice. The preschoolers love it. -- Dorothy There is no sound, no cry in all the world that can be heard unless someone listens .. Outer Limits |

They do lots of gestures in their songs. |

http://www.songsforteaching.com/Movement.html This site has some sound clips and pretty good descriptions of the movements http://www.perpetualpreschool.com/music.html and a site I like better Thanks, that's not bad. But there must be an all-inclusive teaching resource out there. Are kindergarten teachers born knowing these songs? Yes, I know, I could make up my own movements, but I'm really poor at that. Here are the songs I know: Head, and shoulders, knees... I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee... The wheels on the bus... If you're happy and you know it... Three little monkeys... There was a farmer had a dog... Old McDonald (no movment though) Still asking for a tape or DVD? Or maybe some entrepreneurial mommy could simply videotape herself doing all the songs she know? I think some of this may be that kindergarten teachers keep current on these sorts of things. I picked up a lot of my action songs at parent-and-child type classes where the instructor would be the one who would lead us in the songs/games. There are also some songs/games that are part of overall program resources for preschool teachers that include themes with crafts, stories, songs (with actions), and games. Pretty much any resource book will have some. My MIL also gave me "The Lap-Time Song and Play Book" edited by Jane Yolen. Carol Hulls |

Check any teaching supply store in the early childhood kindergarten section, and you'll fund tons of books of these songs with gestures. Gaia videos are really good-these are songs with sign language, simplified (rather than signing everything, only key words are signed) and are really good for kids and easy to learn from. |
