Sore breasts
I'm 15 weeks pg, and it honestly feels like my breasts are on fire. They are
so hot, so sore, so *heavy*, and anything - even air - irritates them. The idea of DH touching me or of breast feeding in 5 months time is enough to make me scream. They've been sore for over a month now, and I kept expecting it to stop! I suppose I am lucky, I've never really suffered breast pain before - not through puberty, or pregnancy, or pmt. Now, though, it's like all that pain came up and bit me all at once. It may be helpful to note that I went through a chemical menopause a few years ago (took zoladex for endometriosis) which made my breasts deflate, and now it seems like all the breast tissue is having to... "re-grow" isn't the right term, but is close enough. Can anyone suggest anything to relieve the pain? I have an appt. to get my bras checked, and am trying cabbage leaves. Anything else I should be trying? And, while I have your attention ;-) I fed my dd, who is nine now, for almost 3 years (and tandem fed my younger at the same time, but she gave up before dd1), but the beginning I remember was excruciating. Since I haven't fed for such a long time - 6 years - will feeding be like this baby is my first... will it hurt as much... or will my body "remember" and not find it as painful in the beginning? Any voices of experience gratefully received :-) Oh! I'm a newbie poster :-) It's very nice to meet you all, I've been lurking/reading for about 10 weeks and you all seem lovely :-) Donna (UK) |

The idea of DH touching me or of breast feeding in 5 months time is enough to make me scream. They've been sore for over a month now, and I kept expecting it to stop! I have something similar going on... Very, very tender, though. DH touches me and I flinch because most of the time - definitely a lot in the morning and at night - they just downright hurt. I've also noticed if I run up the stairs, for example, it hurts as well, and I would consider my breasts to be about average in size when not pg or nursing, yet they seem to become just HUGE towards the end of being pg and while nursing. Stretchy shirts that were fitting before pg were stretched to the max while pg - noticed this most in a picture of when DS was about 3 weeks old and we had family pics done. Hurts to sleep on my side as well, as I noticed my boobs kind of go down whichever side I'm sleeping on. I never have either, didn't have it when pg with DS1 or DS2. Did feel tender when pg with DD, but not tender enough that they hurt at times. I think I might know what you mean about deflating and regrowing, kinda... I noticed I went from a 34C cup before being pg, then up to a 36-38 DD bra, which was more of a tight fit than a good fit. Went back down to a C, which is a pretty big difference, went back up to double D with DD while nursing, and was just fitted for a bra (properly fitted for a regular, non-nusing bra) and was fitted as a 34-36D when DD was about 5 months old. I tend to go up and down, so maybe that could be why it gets tender? Can anyone suggest anything to relieve the pain? I have an appt. to get my bras checked, and am trying cabbage leaves. Anything else I should be trying? I hug a pillow at night. Put one breast on the bottom, one on the top (of the pillow) and try not to put weight on the pillow to cause pain to the bottom. Or, I find I sometimes wake up with the pillow under my side, holding up both breasts. I also found a warm heat pack to be fairly soothing... Either a heat pack you toss in the mic or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel (find the heat pack to be less of a weight compared to a hot water bottle) And, while I have your attention ;-) I fed my dd, who is nine now, for almost 3 years (and tandem fed my younger at the same time, but she gave up before dd1), but the beginning I remember was excruciating. Since I haven't fed for such a long time - 6 years - will feeding be like this baby is my first... will it hurt as much... or will my body "remember" and not find it as painful in the beginning? Any voices of experience gratefully received :-) 1 year, 1 month and 2 days in age between DS1 and DS2. 4 years, 6 months, 4 days between DS2 and DD. Not quite as big of a gap, but I actually found the first time nursing to be very easy and not really painful. I did have a bit of chapped nipples for about 3-5 days, which that Lanisoh (sp?) worked wonders on, but with DD, over 4 years later, or, I guess, more like 3 and a half years later, I found absolutely NO pain ever, and I didn't get sore, chapped nipples one bit. I have a friend who has 7 and a half years between her first and her second, and she as well had no painful experience, although she did admit it felt like she had to almost re-learn how to nurse. Not painful, though, and she too had a bit of soreness with her daughter, who's now 8, at the beginning which didn't last long. Nothing with her son Oh! I'm a newbie poster :-) It's very nice to meet you all, I've been lurking/reading for about 10 weeks and you all seem lovely :-) Donna (UK) Well, welcome welcome! |

Hi Aldee: You probably have mastitis. It's very serious and you need
to go to the emergency room right away. Since you've had it for a month, you are probably valiantly fighting off a serious systemic staph infection. Don't mess around with this, get to a doctor right away. A hundred years ago, women died of milk fever...that's an old fashioned name for what you probably have. I say Probably, because I am not a physician and therefore cannot diagnose. But I urge you to seek medical attention as soon as humanly possible. You won't believe how much better you'll feel in a few days if you receive treatment for this. aldee wrote: I'm 15 weeks pg, and it honestly feels like my breasts are on fire. Any voices of experience gratefully received :-) Can't help overall, but the six year lapse thing I'm just coming through. I nursed my first, he's six now, and when my newest was born in February, WOW, no, it was a whole new learning curve all over again. Purely anecdotal of course, but, it hurt just as much, and I went through the same supply worries, and the same "god, this hurts so much, is it thrush, is it....etc." thing all over again. I'd recommend taking a refresher course on positioning, latch, etc. ahead of time, 'cuz that's what I really had forgotten, and what caused most of our trauma. But it's much better now, so try not to worry about that too much...[grin] -- Cheri Stryker mom to DS1 - 7 yrs. in May DS2 - 6.5 weeks |

Who are you? This is ridiculous. She's pregnant, not nursing. She has no fever or flu symptoms (or she would have mentioned them). It's not mastitis. Go stir up trouble elsewhere. though you can get mastitis whilst pregnant, it is very rare. I definitely had a plugged duct in my 2nd pregnancy when I wasn't nursing, thankfully I spotted it and found a white spot on the nipple, got rid of it and the duct cleared, but that could have turned into mastitis. What Donna has just sounds like extreme but normal breast pain in pregnancy. The good news is that it will likely improve as the pregnancy continues and shouldn't be a problem by the time it comes to breastfeeding. Anne |

The idea of DH touching me or of breast feeding in 5 months time is enough to make me scream. They've been sore for over a month now, and I kept expecting it to stop! I had similar troubles during my first pregnancy. I'm sorry to say it lasted the whole pregnancy and it was winter. If I got cold it was sooo miserable. The good news is that this kind of soreness/pain went away immediately after birth for me - just like the reflux. It is a miracle :-) I had normal tenderness with breastfeeding but it wasn't as bad as that weird soreness and hypersensitivity of pregnancy. Can anyone suggest anything to relieve the pain? Stay warm. Don't use soap on your breasts as then they will dry and itch, which adds to the misery. Since I haven't fed for such a long time - 6 years - will feeding be like this baby is my first... will it hurt as much... or will my body "remember" and not find it as painful in the beginning? I have found that my recent experience is similar to my first one. It has been 3 years since I last nursed. Actually it is a little worse but this time it is twins and I know I have a less then perfect latch sometimes when trying to nurse them both at the same time. It is already getting better though. Oh! I'm a newbie poster :-) It's very nice to meet you all, I've been lurking/reading for about 10 weeks and you all seem lovely :-) Welcome to the group and congrats on the pregnancy :-) -- Nikki, mama to Hunter 4/99 Luke 4/01 Brock 4/06 Ben 4/06 |

I know where you're at-I went from a B cup to a DD cup in four months. Go soak in the tub for a bit or use a cold washcloth. Can anyone suggest anything to relieve the pain? I have an appt. to get my bras checked, and am trying cabbage leaves. Anything else I should be trying? Hot soak, cold washcloth, get professionally fitted and buy what the person recommends (spendy, but mine lasted for three years and OMG the support), get some of the gel backed nursing pads, stick 'em in the fridge to cool and use those.
