Default cow's milk vs formula for 16mo??

any reason NOT to use cow's milk if he's only taking about 4 oz at
bedtime? *I* will happily be the one to fork out the cash for organic
formula, if it makes more sense.

:-(

Is he eating a balanced diet? He should also be getting lots of nutrition
if you are still nursing him, even if it is limited. I'd say skip the
formula. If you are really worried about nutrition, you could also give a
vitamin supplement.

Hi -

Is your baby eating a varied diet of solids? If so, milk is just one
more solid and is FINE for him to drink. If he's NOT eating a varied
diet of solids, then breastmilk is far more important and you should
limit the cow's milk a lot. Cows' milk is not, after all, a "whole" food
the way breastmilk is.

My two cents,

yes. Including loads of meat, so I have no worries about iron.

yeah, well.
If I COULD offer him breast milk, I would.

He's getting, as near as I can make out, NO milk from me, :-(( but I
hadn't looked at the other angle (supporting the formula industry,
though in some ways, supporting an organic alternative feels a lot less
nasty to me).

Thanks.
That helped.

I'm not worried about nutrition that much. He eats well.
I still *try* to nurse, but I think he's not been getting much/any for
a little while. :-((

Well, I'll be the one that bites and wonders why you think this.

No let down, no interest from him, no engorgement, no sleep for hours if
I try to nurse him to sleep, and yet will drop off in under 10 minutes
with 2-4 oz of milk, only rare swallowing sounds when he does nurse, no
sign of milk on the nipple shield, other than a slight tinge to the
saliva left there, no milk past a few drops either by hand or pump.

How else would I tell?

In any case, I'm not interested in spending 3 hours a night tryiing to
get him to go to sleep if a few ounces of "outside" milk will let him
drift off peacefully and quickly. I've been nursing for 16 months,
nursing with a nipple shield for 15 months. I've never questioned my
supply until he was about 14 mo, and much as I would like to keep
nursing, I can't force him to, can I?

So what are you worried about if not nutrition? As mentioned by other
posters, milk is not to replace bm or formula but to complement a balanced
diet.

I quit pumping at 12 months and DD (almost 14 mos) only nurses 1-2 times per
day, upon returning from work and before bed. On the weekends, before
afternoon nap and before bed. I checked tonight, there is milk :-) No, I
NEVER get engorged and have not felt a letdown in several months but it is
still there.

Does your DS just rarely nurse?

Shannon
