I was at a BBQ yesterday and was horrified to hear that if I want to
work longer thatn a month before the due date, I will have to get a Dr's
certificate for EACH & EVERY day proclaiming I am fit & healthy and will
not birth in the office ???

Is this true ?? - I am gobsmacked !!

I planned to work for as long as I and my doctor felt comfortable.
Ideally, this being my first child, I expect to go 2 weeks over my date
( if all goes well in the lead-up ) like my maternal and paternal
mothers. So I planned to leave 2 weeks before my EDD.

I felt 4 weeks ( and then possibly 6wks ) was tooo long to be sitting
around contemplating my own health and freaking at every little twang
and perhaps stressing myself unneccessarily. As friends have pointed
out, you can only clean the house sooo much in the lead up

Anyone ?

...snip

i think it depends on the organisation you work for. They may have a
policy document that outlines the requirements ?
I am leaving with a month of my EDD - only by a few days. The only
documentation I needed was a cert from the doctor to confirm the
pregnancy (nevermind my appearance.. lol!)

My employers policy does state that they'd rather leave start from 6
weeks out but noone around here knows anything about anything as I'm one
of 3 women that work in a mostly male department... so I was never asked
to provide anything else.

As much as I'd love that extra bit of money that staying at work longer
would give me I just cant be bothered anymore. It's too hot and I'm
getting tired again through the day so I'm looking forward to a break
before the great upheaval begins.

cheers,
Aprill

I don't know. I have never worked that close to the end of either of
my pregnancies. I do know that if you are on the Newstart Allowance
from Centrelink that you don't have to look for work 6 week prior and
6 weeks after your due date.

It may be policy for your organisation, but I could have worked up to the
day before if I'd wanted to ..... but then sitting behind a computer isn't
really that tough on your body ...
As it was, I finished 6 weeks before my EDD (only 4 week before DD's birth
though) as my BP had started to climb and I was feeling really tired.

Check with your Human Resources Officer on company policy.

If you are a public servant, yes it is indeed true. They do not like
women claiming later that they were worked into premature labour so
they push you off onto maternity leave early. On the plus side if you
are a public servant the odds are good that you will have paid
maternity leave for at least 6 weeks so it's not all bad.

FWIW I have a friend who worked up until 2 weeks before her due date
while working for the NSW State government, she did have to provide a
medical certificate but her employer's HR dept was happy to have
weekly med certs rather than daily. Check with your HR dept to see
exactly what is necessary for you.

It is the dole basically. It is the one for people who are out of
work, but are looking to become employed. It used to have a different
name, but I don't know what it is.

For more information than you probably want to know, you can visit
this link on the Centrelink website:
