Vomit and breastfeeding...
Should I nurse Alena after she throws up? She was acting hungry, so I fed
her... is that okay? -- Lina Alena born July 1st, 2003 www.maternalinstinctscanada.com validate the email address before sending. |

Vomit and breastfeeding...
Breastmilk is just perfect after throwing up, and with a stomach virus. It
gets digested quickly, so even if they throw up right afterwards they still got something in their systems. And it's gentle on their stomachs... and is best for preventing dehydration due to vomitting. And even if I misread and you just meant spitting up... I say yeah, still feed her if she acts hungry. No sense in making her wait. "AlenasMom" wrote in message . cable.rogers.com... Should I nurse Alena after she throws up? No... this was most definitely vomit... it didn't smell like spitup, which
we've dealt with a lot. this smelled like vomit and (Sorry, graphic) was chunky. It covered me, DH, a chair, Alena, and a large part of our carpet .... (Happy New Year huh?) Vomit and breastfeeding...
IF it's a stomach bug, she'll most likely vomit it back up, but at least
some of the fluid will be digested, so you'll keep her hydrated. Breastmilk is really the best thing for sick babies, so yup, go ahead and nurse. -Shannon "AlenasMom" wrote in message . cable.rogers.com... Should I nurse Alena after she throws up? I was told to either 1) feed the baby a teaspoon of water every 15 minutes to keep dehydration at bay and if the baby keeps the water down for a couple of hours, try frequent but short nursings, or 2) try frequent but short nursings from the very beginning. The baby usually objects to being taken off the breast so soon, but if she nurses too much, she may just throw up again. Jeanne |

Vomit and breastfeeding...
Hi - With anyone who is throwing up, the best solution is to offer just a little bit of fluids at a time. For big kids, this can mean a sip or two every 10-15 minutes, just so the fluid stays down. Translate to a baby: lots of VERY short nursing session (just a couple of swallows) every 10-15 minutes. Keep an eye on your baby's diapers. The biggest danger with a stomach bug is dehydration. Breastmilk is, actually, the best thing you can offer your baby during a stomach bug. Just be cautious about quantity. With any luck the bug is over with by now. With our kids they never lasted more than 24 hours, and often less. --Beth Kevles http://web.mit.edu/kevles/www/nomilk.html -- a page for the milk-allergic Disclaimer: Nothing in this message should be construed as medical advice. Vomit and breastfeeding...
Water is much easier to throw up than anything else... breastmilk is the
best thing for babies no matter what. If it is a stomach virus you will have developed immunities to it (from handling her vomit, etc) and giving her your breast milk will give her those immunities right back to help her fight it. Ummmm... not necessarily. When DS was 13 months old, he got a stomach bug, which I did *not* develop immunites for, and he promptly passed it along to me and daddy. We all ended up in the emergency room being treated for dehydration. It was yucky. Imagine being so weak and dehydrated that you cannot walk, or even pick up your crying baby...(shudder) Nowadays, at the first 'urp' we go into "rotavirus lockdown" where everything is washed in hot water and hands are washed just about every 5 minutes. But breastmilk is still best for sick babies. Just wash your hands a lot! -Shannon |
