I tried the First Years disposable sippy cups. My other daughter likes
them, but Jaden won't drink from them. I think it comes out too fast for
her. Today I tried Wal-Mart's "Nubby" cups. The spout is thinner and
requires more sucking. You can change the spout setting to fast or slow.
She took a few sips from it, at least she didn't hurl it across the room
this time! Maybe we're getting there! In the meantime I'm giving her a lot
of soup with her meals so she won't get dehydrated.

Have you tried different sippies? Sometimes kids prefer those sports

bottle
sippies that have straws. I highly recommend the First Years disposable

sippie
cups (wal-Mart and Target sells them). They are spill proof but the

suction is
weak so that they can easily get the fluid out.

Thanks Andrea. If we don't have any luck today I'll try the Avent.

Peggy-

A lot of people, myself included, have had good luck with the Avent spout
attachment. It is soft and is more of a cross between a nipple and a

spout,
IMO. Jordan wasn't too keen on giving up the bottle and wouldn't drink

from a
sippy cup, but I did get her to drink from the Avent spout. After she was

used
to it I switched her to a regular sippy cup with no problem. We used the

Avent
bottles so I just bought the spout and it screws onto the bottle with the
bottle ring.

Peggy --

Our kids also had bottles past 2 yo. We went cold turkey sometime not long
after their second birthday. Chris was unhappy for a day or two, then
adjusted just fine. Erica was inconsolable for much longer. She was on soy
formula, by the way, as milk seemed to make her skin itchy. Chris did fine
with milk. We never did juice or water from bottles, by the way, so she
*was* getting fluids -- juice/water from a sippy cup -- just no
milk/formula.

Anyway, like Brigitte, after a few days, we wound up giving her bottles
again, at the beginning generally during times that Chris was unaware of it
so that he wouldn't want one. It was clear that she simply wasn't ready to
give up the bottle, we were concerned with her calcium intake, and in the
end, we couldn't find a reason to continue the battle. Why shouldn't she
drinking from a bottle if she enjoyed it and wasn't falling asleep with one
in her mouth? I couldn't come up with any reason besides "it looks funny
for an older kid to have a bottle". That wasn't enough of a reason for me.

BUT, it did take her quite a while after that before she willingly gave up
her bottle (don't ask -- I won't tell you how long!), and she never drank
formula again after that, so she went a while on probably too little
calcium. At 6 1/2 she can now drink milk, but hates it plain (as do I) --
she only likes chocolate or vanilla.

My girls are almost 2 and I have still not successfully gotten them off

the
bottle and onto sippy cups. I first tried only their juice in cups, but
they wouldn't really drink it and just wait for their bottles of milk.

So,
I just decided to take the bottles away completely and give them cups. We
are now starting the third day of this and while one of my daughters is
drinking from the cup no problem, my other daughter refuses. She has

barely
had anything to drink in two days. When I give her the cup she throws it
away and cries. I'm worried she's going to get dehydrated so I'm giving
her lots of fruit. I thought if she got thirsty enough she would drink
from the cup. I know she's capable because I've seen her take sips

before.
What do I do if she still refuses to drink for the third day in a row? Do

I
relent and give her the bottle? I don't want to be inconsistent and I

don't
want to ruin my other daughter's progress by taking out the bottle again.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I feel like the meanest mother on the
face of the earth not giving her the bottle but if I don't do it now I'll
never get her off it.

Help!

Brigitte,
I am so glad to read that J & K *just* got off the bottles. A & A drink
from sippies all day, but refuse to drink milk from a sippy, so they get
a first thing in the morning bottle and a bedtime bottle. I was worrying
that at 18 mos. old we were getting too old for bottles, but like the
binky, I guess they will let me know when they are ready to give the
bottle up.
