Default projectile vomiting

I plan to take DD to the ped tomorrow or Monday. This was a baby who barely
spit up when she came home from the hospital. After a few weeks, she
started spitting up. There was some vomiting. Sometimes, there was quite a
bit of vomit. Sometimes, it was projectile, but not much more volume than
in her spit up. It's progressed so that now, she is forcefully vomiting.
Last night, she was BF'ing, very fussy and uncomfortable. From boob level,
she managed to vomit so that it shot to my neckline and drenched the entire
front of my shirt. She's only 8 weeks old. I can't believe a little baby
could have that much in her to vomit. It was white curdles and smelled
acidic. Afterwards, she was very relaxed and peaceful and ready to BF
again. The vomiting and spit up she does everyday. The projectile part
happens about evey other day but is worsening in force and volume. She
doesn't look dehydrated or sickly. Her umbilical hernia is huge and has a
purple hue, but I can press it in and it doesn't look like it hurts. It
looks larger than at birth, though. Could that have anything to do with it?
Anyone have any ideas to help tide over a worried mom until we get to the
ped?

If you are worried go to the hospital and have her checked out. They don't
mind new worried moms coming in for some advise. Not sure where you are but
here in Ontario we have the health line you can call 24 hrs a day, if you
have something like that give them a call. Also you could call the hospital
and ask for the department that delivers babies ( sorry can't think of what
it is called at the moment...it's been a long day).... and they would tell
you if she needs to be seen right away or what you can do to help it until
you see your doctor.

Good luck.

Somehow, I missed the original post.

It could be nothing, but it could also be a form of gastro-esophogal
reflux: your daughter sounds a LOT like my son did as an infant.

I had a problem with doctors brushing me off, and saying things like,
"Oh, all babies spit up." He ended up not properly diagnosed until he
was 4 (years!) and slept through the night for the first time after he
started on Tagamet. So if YOU think something is wrong, do try to
insist that the doctors pay attention!

I would definately have the umbilicus looked at, and talk to the doctor
about the rest of it.

Hi there,

I think you should definitely have your daughter seem by a ped, if only to
calm your fears. My daughter used to do the same thing. I remember being
at a restaurant and having her up on the table in her carseat after feeding
her (she was really crabby so I had fed her again, assuming she was
hungry... wrong move). Well, she had this huge projectile emesis all over
herself, her carseat, and the table. Generally when I nursed her, I got to
the point where I would routinely nurse on a specific chair that I kept
covered with a big (washable) quilt, she projectile vomited so frequently.
The doc was not the least bit concerned, as she continued to gain (lots) of
weight. The conclusion *I* finally came to was that I made such a large
quantity of milk so quickly, she would over-eat.... sometimes she would be
gulping to keep up with my supply.... : ) Son had the projectile vomiting
too, but not quite so bad...

I really can't answer about the hernia, only her doc could. I do know with
hernias you should go in right away if they become painful. But if she is
eating well otherwise and gaining weight, I think you could wait till Monday
to be seen. But go in right away if she shows signs of pain, fever,
dehydration or lethargy..

Good luck!

Hmmm...that's what our son started doing at 3 weeks. He was diagnosed
with pyloric synosis (sp?) at 4 weeks and had corrective surgery. I
would definetly have her checked to rule this out. It's just a simple
ultrasound on thier belly.
