Little girls and hair?
I was doing DD1's hair this morning... as I do most mornings. She's 3 and
has fairly long hair. I've never cut it, other than her bangs and a minimal trim when needed. Today I decided on a french braid. Then I did DD2 - she's 2. Her hair isn't very long. Just past her shoulders, but she has hair like mine - very fair and fine. I did a simple pony tail on the top of her head. As I was doing DD1's hair, I got thinking about how I usually do something with the girls' hair, although nothing fancier than a french braid. I also started thinking about how when we go out, more often than not someone makes a comment about DDs' hair and how I've done something with it. It seems most people are amazed that the girls can actually sit long enough to do something like a french braid, but really, it doesn't take me more than about 5-6 minutes. I've also been doing their hair one way or another since their hair was long enough to do something with - from probably about 6-8 months with DD1, about 8-10 months with DD2. I also have noticed that many little girls don't have hair really done much. Nothing at all. I don't really care either way, but I just find it's easier for my girls with their hair to keep it somewhat under control and free of food, juice, knots and other random things. Am I one of the few people that does something with their little girl's hair? Both girls sit very, very well, even if it takes more than 5 mins... I will sometimes spend even about 10 minutes to pony tail up DD1's hair, braid a few small strands and wrap the pony up with the braids and pin it up, for one example, and there's rarely any issues at all. I'm also always looking for new ideas to try out with their hair (mostly DD1 because she has much more hair to work with) and I'm wondering if others here do the same - or did do the same with a toddler/preschooler. DDs both ask for their hair to be done on occasion if I don't do anything and both with bring me hair ties and a comb if they want something done. Does anyone else do this? |

None of my girls liked for their hair to be messed with at all at different times. But when we'd go for dinner, or family get-togethers I'll braid it or twist it. My favorite is to french braid down both halves of their head, then either braid the two braids together or put the braids in a ponytail at the end and curl it a bit. I do not know the correct term for the twisting, but it's like french-braiding except you twist each section of hair. After you twist a section, add another section and twist the whole thing, then add another. It looks really "fancy" but doesn't take anymore time than braiding. Sometimes I french braid/twist the hair down to the middle of their head and let the rest just hang down. My oldest still won't let me mess with her hair (unless it's halloween!) but the 11 and 6 year old will ask me to braid it sometimes. Marie |

Does anyone else do this? Well, Sara's only a year and a bit but since she was born with loads of hair (I think she had her hair combed before she was weighed and measured...) I've had to use clips and elastics in her hair pretty much from 3 months on. I can't use clips right now because she pulls them out and chews on them, and I've found one kind of hair elastics that she can't remove because they're tiny and she can't grab them properly when they're in her hair. I usually just grab a hand full of hair from the front, put the elastic in and let her take off again because she hates having to hold still. But I have done a ponytail and pigtails on her before, which make her look about 3 years old... No wonder people keep asking why she's not walking ;-) at birth: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1163/...deb963d22b.jpg 6 months: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2248/...6a6e94b1eb.jpg 8 months: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2292/...abd3354c50.jpg 10 months: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3189/...fbb7c1.jpg?v=0 (Yeah, she loves "helping" with the laundry...) I don't have a photo of her older than 10 months, at least not online, but her hair is past her shoulder blades now... cu nicole |

I have trouble with my own hair and have never really known how to do it. My mom never had her hair cut (always wore it in braids around her head or in a bun) and so she had no experience with hair dressing to pass on. My hair was long until I was 12. My mom braided my sister's hair, but didn't braid my hair although occasionally she would put it in rags to give us Shirley Temple curls. When I would have a permanent it was a frizzy disaster. I just never learned how to deal with my hair other than to put it in a knot or pony tail or to have it really short. I have very fine and somewhat sparse hair but it does have a wave to it if it is short enough. I do know how to braid, but not how to do a French braid. DD#1 and DD#3 were mostly bald until they were past two years old. Then DD#1 had such curly hair that it is never longer than shoulder length no matter how long it got. People used to ask me if I'd given her a perm. There was no point in doing anything with it except keeping it cut because when it got long it got bushy and it was much easier to manage when it was short. I doubt if it could have been braided. DD#2 had straighter hair which would get sun streaked in the summer and people asked me if I had colored it. Her hair has a nice wave to it and good body (unlike mine). I used to keep hers short too, but I decided that it made her mouth look wide and was not attractive so when she got older, I would braid it. DD#3 had much blonder hair somewhat between DD#1 and DD#2 - not quite as curly as DD#1 and not as good texture as DD#2. My mother used to call it dandelion fluff. Didn't do much with it IIRC - just kept if off her face with a barrette or something. All the girls had horses and learned to braid manes and tails and dd#2 and dd#3 can do French braids on themselves.. DD#1's daughter has straight hair which she kept in a bob - now her hair is long enough to braid into a coronet. (She's 26 years old). Her sons have curly hair like their mom - kind of a waste. The younger one keeps it really short to his skull. The older one (age 28) has a full beard and since he rarely has his hair cut and is 6'4+ and weights 250 or more, he looks like a mountain man. DD#2's daughter's hair is somewhat like DD#3's hair - more curly than her mom's but not as curly as her other aunt's hair. When her mom braids it, there are attractive tendrils around her face.. Her son has straight hair which he keeps cropped short. DD#3's daughters have hair much like hers - curly so that not much needs to be done with it except that the little one (who will be three in December) is still mostly bald or has hair so light that it can't be seen. Her son has curly hair which he keeps cropped short. My ds was the only one with straight hair, and I used to give him a military haircut like his dad's. His son has wavy hair, but during the school year he's in some kind of ROTC unit and keeps his hair short. He prefers it longer. His daughter's hair is more or less the same - wavy - and she has it long. .. |

Some girls don't like their hair done, even if they don't have a problem sitting still long enough, and will rip things out almost as fast as you can put them in. Best wishes, Ericka |

I only have a boy who has had a buzz cut ever since he was old enough to express an opinion about it (although he likes to let it grow longer in the winter). So I can't say why parents of girls don't do french braids more. But I'm totally with you on the french braids. If I'm camping, and when I went in to surgery to have my baby, I french braided my hair. And someone suggested it was a professional look for a conference talk. French braids gets medium to long hair out of the way in a very attractive way and it holds. Banty |

If hair and its arrangement is important to you, you will make the effort to make it important to your children. If it's not, you would have cut it short and be done with it. FWIW, what you described is similar to how the black women I've known have trained their girl children to sit through hairdressing ordeals. I have boys, and they had short hair until they were able to take care of it themselves. One now has very long hair, one did until recently deciding to cut it off. |

Yes! #1 has waist length wavy hair. I French plait it most days (either usual or inside out) into 2 plaits. For fancy I'll either partually plait it and leave some loose, or do multiple French plaits. She's always sat still well-I learnt to French plait on her, spent about an hour and a half trying out how to do it when she was about 4yo. She also likes "bunny ears" (you do ordinary plaits with a bobble top and bottom and join top and bottom with a ribbon to make a circle of hair) Since she was about 18 months and we went to a wedding she wouldn't go out of the house without a ribbon in, she'll sit as long as I want, to make sure her hair is as she wants. Another one she used to like is do two small plaits at the front and then pin it up round her face like a band. If she has her hair loose for too long then it's very tangled and takes a long time to comb out. #2 has short ringlets. It's above shoulder length, but I've never had it cut and I don't think it'll get any longer. People always admire her hair, even if I've done nothing! I do either a partual French plait both sides, or do a side parting and do one French plait from the parting to the other side, leaving most of the hair loose. It looks very dated, but it suits her face. She doesn't sit as well, and I can't get all her hair into two plaits easily. She only sometimes wants ribbons. I usually do their hair over breakfast on school days because it saves time and then they're naturally sitting still! Debbie |

Some days he wants it down though, and since it's his hair, as long as it's brushed and clean I let him have it how he wants it. -- Mama to Alexander 6/6/05 and Jack 7/7/07 |
