So, I'm having real problems with this one breast - plugged duct by day 3,
mastitis by day for, blood blisters on the end of the nipple, scabbing, and
pain *all* *the* *time*, plus nursing is excrutiating. So I've got Soothies
on my nipples, per instructions of the ICBLCs at the hospital, and things
are improving on one side, and not the other. Then a light bulb went on in
my head:

This nipple has been erect, and very painful, for like 2 days. It WILL not
relax. And damn if it didn't feel like burning. So....

I dug out my tube of Miconazole cream and smeared on a dab. And took a nap.

When I woke up, my nipple had relaxed. The burning had stopped. And it
hasn't come back yet.

I have a yeast infection in that nipple already. Damn damn damn.

Well, time to paint the kid's mouth purple.

Angela,

Whenever I had mastitis I always expressed off the bad side, which gave my
sore bleeding nipple the time it needed to heal, then only nursed the baby
on the good side.I found mastitis and sore nipples were gone within 24-48
hours this way. You have a wound and putting a sucking baby on it isn't
letting it heal, but I understand you need to keep the breast flowing.
I have had mastitis with 4 babies out of 5 and found this method worked for
me.

Good luck!

Andrea, mom of 5 babies - Kamron David is the latest addition aged 8 weeks
weighing 14 pounds.
