Smelly mattress, what to do?

We bought a kingsdown mattress in the summer and it still smells slightly.
I assume it is the chemicals or fire retardant stuff. It is not a nasty
smell but yechy because i know it is that mattress, it is a fragrant smell.
DOes anybody know what this is? It is from the mattress because I put nose
up to it and got a stronger scent of it. My baby sleeps in this room with
me, and I am concerned about this.

What can I do about it?
What are my alternatives for a mattress? Perhaps one that is not treated
with chemicals or organic.

I don't know exactly what kind of smell you are trying to describe,
but if the weather is sunny and dry, you might just try taking a
couple saw horses out into the backyard and lay the mattress on them
for an afternoon.

IMHO, there's nothing more soothing than the smell of sun-dried
laundry, and I imagine that if the mattress got the same treatment,
it'd last even longer (and might even get rid of that smell).

total of over $1000.00! In the third week, I had over $10.000.00 and it's still
growing.
This is now my fourth week, I have

Febreze does a good job and AFAIK is not harmful (those rumors about it
being bad for pets was an internet hoax). However, I use lavender oil on my
sheets, etc to promote sleep. Since lavender is considered a natural
antiseptic, I figure that's a bonus. You can get straight oil lots of
places, but I love my lavender/vanilla oil and spray from Bath and Body
Works.

It may be simply the plastic covering that may have once covered the
mattress. If it lingers for more than a week or so, I would ditch the
mattress. Mold and similar things could grow if it wasn't cared for before
it got to you.
If you do need another, definitely go with 1-800-Mattress. They will
come and take away the "smelly" one no problem. I also got a great deal on
the W Hotels bed which is probably the most comfortable thing i have EVER
slept on. AND it doesn't smell! I like spreading the word on this one!
