Review: Broken Wings (**)
BROKEN WINGS
A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2004 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): ** In Nir Bergman's BROKEN WINGS (KNAFAYIM SHVUROT), Dafna Ulman (Orly Silbersatz Banai) is a hard working midwife who is raising four children on her own after the death of her husband nine months ago. The circumstances of the death are barely mentioned, but it's something that's still affecting the family even if they rarely talk about it. The relatively inconsequential and languid movie merely marks time until a predictable tragedy occurs in the middle. It's easily guessed resolution comes at the end. Although Banai's performance is okay, the actors (Eliana Magon, Daniel Magon, Maya Maron and Nitai Gaviratz) who play the key roles of Dafna's children, ranging in ages from about six to twenty-two, are quite weak and don't show any emotional attachment to the material until the conclusion. With not much happening in any of the story -- Dafna considers a video dating service while her kids experience the typical relationship problems of their respective ages -- one's mind naturally wanders. I got to thinking about subtitles. Why release a film without at least demanding that the person preparing the subtitles run a spell checker on them to catch the obvious errors? BROKEN WINGS runs 1:27. The film is in Hebrew with English subtitles. It is rated R for "some language, brief nudity and drug use" and would be acceptable for teenagers. The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, April 30, 2004. In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the Camera Cinemas.
