first day of kindergarten and homework!
motherbear wrote:
Alfie Kohn has an interesting article about how education research is frequently misused, and uses homework as an example. He gives several examples where author X cites study Y as supporting claim Z, but when he actually tracked down study Y, it said no such thing. According to his review, no one has ever found evidence that homework for elementary students has any beneficial effect, although there are data that associates it with a worse attitude about school. "Abusing Research: The Study of Homework & Other Examples," http://www.alfiekohn.org/teaching/research.htm I haven't read this throughly, but it is an interesting article. Although I ended up feeling that I should be tracking down the primary research as well and seeing if it backs up his conclusions :-). (FWIW, the article says that often people refer to original research supporting conclusion Z, when it doesn't support those conclusions - no surprise to posters here.) -- Penny Gaines UK mum to three |

first day of kindergarten and homework!
toypup wrote: DS finished the first day of kindergarten yesterday. For his homework, he had to write his name, color a house, write his address, draw a picture of someone he wants to talk on the phone with, write his phone number. It took about half an hour and he was exhausted. Afterward, we were supposed to read, but I wasn't going there. I was expecting homework, I thought maybe write one letter of the alphabet, but this is ridiculous. I told DH and he agreed, saying there many kids coming into kindergarten not even reading much less writing addresses. We happen to have a very long address, so it wasn't easy. Anyway, just venting. Today, there is more homework, but I tried to get some of it out of the way this morning before school so he is not overwhelmed after school. Kindergarten should not give kids too much homework. You could take with the teacher of your son. Sincerely, Scott |
