I am GSB positive and chose to take the antibiotics during labour. It kind of sucked being hooked up to an IV. I've heard though that you can take pills instead of having an IV. I think I might do that next time. If you have the antibiotics via IV, ask for a heplock setup. Usually they can stuff a dose into you and then take the IV off, leaving just the heplock. Way better. My water broke 27 hours before I went into labor, and I took antibiotics during that time. When I went into labor the OB on call (I was using the nurse midwives) demanded an IV dose. But it was a *dose* and took about an hour or even less, to get into me and then all I had was a thing on the back of my left hand, and I could move around, get in the shower, etc. --Carolyn -- Carolyn Fairman http://www.stanford.edu/~cfairman/ |

Shannon wrote: Well I am positive as well and my doctor(ob) told me I will have the IV, which I know from being induced, it sucks. My family doctor called me and gave me a prescription for meds and my ob said I will still have to have the IV even if I take the meds. My family doctor never said anything about the IV all he said was the meds is to prevent from the bacteria getting into the birth canal. My ob said I don't have to take the meds but I can if I want to. I am going to because if it can prevent anything from hurting my baby(and there is a chance) even before the labor I will do it. I tested positive for gbs with my 2nd pregnancy. I did have the IV antibiotics (2 doses, 4 hours apart) during labor, but it wasn't a big deal. They gave me a heplock (sp?) so I wasn't hooked up to the IV drip unless they were actually giving me antibiotics. It didn't stop me from walking the halls, laboring in the tub, etc. Clisby |

I'm also not sure that it's a good idea to mix OB treatment by two different doctors. The OP said that she was seeing a GP and an OB (from memory). That is an acceptable way to cover your prenatal appointments in some countries. Yes. Shannon is from Canada and an OB is generally not the primary caregiver in a pregnancy, the GP is. You learn something every day! Thanks. I only meant however, that if an OB and a GP disagree on pregnancy advice, that the OB's advice is probably the one to trust. Cathy Weeks Mommy to Kivi Alexis |

caregiver in a pregnancy, the GP is. Not sure what a GP is but OB's are generally the main and most often only doctor seen during a pregnancy. Shannon |
