When to give water?
It has been very hot and humid here for the past few days and I was
wondering what the consensus was on giving a baby a little water to keep them cool. Holly is five months and a breastmilk via bottle fed baby and takes a little cereal each day. Anyone? -- ..oO rach Oo. |

Debbie That's a good idea to add with cereal... Breastmilk in itself has a lot of water in it to begin with. My ped had told me that there's absolutely no reason to offer water to a breastfed baby. Breast milk already has a lot of water in it, which offers hydration along with the nutrients. |

Holly is five months and a breastmilk via bottle fed baby and takes a little cereal each day. Anyone? Before 9 months you have to be cautious, as it's pretty easy for them to get water intoxication, and a little cereal isn't really much in the way of solids. (I'm certainly not recommending that you up the solids--just observing that she's on primarily a liquid diet, which makes it easier for water to upset her electrolyte balance.) If you were nursing, I would say not to give water at all and just put the baby to the breast often to get plenty of the watery foremilk that will keep her hydrated. Given that you're bottle feeding, even though it's breastmilk, it's a little more challenging as the composition doesn't change as much. By and large, it's unlikely that she will need water. Just give her plenty of breastmilk. If you feel that she is truly in need of additional fluids, I wouldn't give more than a very small amount of water in a day. Water intoxication is scary, and with young infants you don't have to give them gallons (or even quarts) of water to get there. Best wishes, Ericka |

I live in CA, and there isn't any recommended time to give water. You can always put it in a sippy cup and see if she wants to play with it. If she drinks it, okay, if not, okay. If she's thirsty, she'll drink breastmilk. If she's hungry, she'll drink breastmilk. It's a food and a beverage, all at the same time! -- Jamie Earth Angels: Taylor Marlys, 1/3/03 Addison Grace, 9/30/04 Check out the family! -- www.MyFamily.com, User ID: Clarkguest1, Password: Guest Become a member for free - go to Add Member to set up your own User ID and Password |
