Default Insurance coverage for pregnancy

I'm an expat working in New York and we are thinking about trying to
get pregnant. In my county health insurance is set-up in a complete
different way. What I'm trying to find out is what is covered within a
health insurance (Humana one) during your pregnancy and what costs to
expect. I know my insurance will cover 80% of all costs.
Thank you in advance for all information.

I would call Humana direct and ask. They would be a better source than
anyone else on your policy. 1-800-4-HUMANA

Unfortunately, it is *very* difficult to get that sort of
information. It's easy to get coverage information by calling
your insurance company. They'll tell you what the maternity
benefits are. The tricky bit to get is the cost information.
That can vary hugely depending on provider, hospital, your
wants, and how your birth goes. There'll be charges from the
OB/midwife, from the hospital, and from other professionals
in the hospital (like the anesthesiologist, if you use one).
You might find that a vaginal birth, including a one day
hospital stay, might run around $3000. The OB or midwifery
care would likely run $3000-4000. Anesthesiologists would
be extra, as would any complications necessitating a c-section
or extended stay. Labs will generate additional costs. Soup
to nuts, you're probably talking around $10k for an uncomplicated
vaginal delivery, but that could vary *a lot*.
Or, you could choose something like a home birth or
a birth in a freestanding birth center. Those would likely
run you $3000-4500 total (including everything), but obviously,
if complications arose necessitating a transfer to the hospital,
you'd be out the hospital fees as well.

Best wishes,
Ericka

Your name sounds Dutch, if you are, you could consider taking out the
expatriates health insurance of Goudse Insurance. They cover all expenses
for pregnancy, I know from experience. The only trouble is that you have
to send them all the bills first and will get reimbursed later. I've found
it relatively easy to set that up with the hospital he they bill me, I
send it in and pay when I get the reimbursement. It is a bit of a hassle,
since billing here is quite different, but it is doable. In case of
hospitalization, the insurance will pay the expenses directly.

I can also recommend this insurance in general, they have an SOS service
that allows you to fly home or get a close relative over in case of
emergency. We've had to use that once, and it saved us a lot of stress and
money.

As to what costs to expect, that will depend on the type of care you need.
A midwife can be relatively cheap, if you require OB/GYN care, it depends
on the hospital. E.g I pay $70 per visit, but since I'm expecting twins,
they perform an u/s each visit, which costs $400 each time (that's twice
the amount for singleton, since twin u/s takes twice as long). The initial
bloodwork that was done during my first visit cost about $500. I don't
know what it would cost to deliver at a hospital, haven't BTDT yet...

HTH!
