3 social workers face drug charges
3 social workers face drug charges
TONY BURBECK WCNC http://www.charlotte.com/breaking_ne...ry/541802.html ALBEMARLE -- Two Stanly County Department of Social Services employees whose job it is to protect kids face drug charges. A former Stanly County DSS employee has also been arrested and charged. Police say they got medications with fake prescriptions. They also say the arrests came as a result of a separate drug investigation. The names of the current and former DSS employees popped up. "Yeah, that's him,” said a woman who didn’t want us to use her name while looking at the mug shot of Mark Andrew, Jr. She says she remembers Andrew's face. He is a children's services worker with Stanly County Department of Social Services. "He came to my house one day when DSS got a call about my granddaughter." That granddaughter ran out of an open door and into the street. "Asked me all kinds of questions about why she was in the road and who took care of her,” she said. Child Protective Services investigates maltreatment, abuse, neglect and dependency and tries to fix the problems. "It was an honest mistake, she got out,” she said. "Sent me a letter saying case was closed." Andrew's case isn't closed. Neither is fellow child services worker Jennifer Burden and former DSS employee Rita McKeithan. Police say all three used fake prescriptions to get drugs. Andrews is also charged with trafficking amphetamines and McKeithan with trafficking opium. Police say the trafficking charges are due to the amounts and the packaging. Police say nothing indicates drugs were at the DSS office, sold, or tied to clients. Monday, the suspects aren't home, moved or are in jail. Acquaintances and neighbors say given the charges, if these three were making judgments and decisions about other people's lives -- one word comes to mind -- hypocrites. Stanly County DSS did not return our phone calls. All three are due in court May 12. 3 social workers face drug charges
Is Child Protection going to reach the point where,
like the pharmaceuticals found in city water supplies, the government conceals these stories? It's worked SO WELL to reassure people about city drinking water! LOL Maybe concealing these stories will avoid people deciding that caseworkers are scum? Too late! SRplus wrote Hey Asshat, It doesn't look concealed to me. I didn't say it was, but I know they'd LIKE it to be! I used the analogy of the recent story where pharmaceuticals have been found in city water supplies all over the country, but some efforts have been made to conceal this "to avoid panic". Want to argue that CPS agencies don't have PR people? Compared w/the numbers of parents who abuse their kids due to using drugs, Usually they get them for NEGLECT or "risk of neglect", not actual abuse. It's an all purpose slippery slope label that could be applied to almost any parent. (And conveniently NOT applied to agents of the state.) I'd say the number of caseworkers isn't all that bad. Sure, the level of DRUG ADDICTION and drug dealing among Child Protection caseworkers is just fine! LOL *PLus, fire the caseworkers who break laws. *Hold them to the highest standards. What do you mean when you say hold them to the highest standards? Currently the system does just the opposite. They are granted exceptions and the standards are reduced to make their job easy. Standards? Like requiring them to be LICENSED SW's? Standards? Like a spelled out code of conduct where any violation is grounds for termination? Standards? Like removing all legal immunity when laws are broken? Standards? Like when Florida actually passed a special law making CPS caseworker lies/perjury a FELONY? How about weeding out the ones with malevolent parent-hating attitudes? |
