At what cost safe schools
40 or 50 years ago, before the "educational flatline," a principal
might take a slat from an old desk and convert into a serviceable paddle. A few well-timed phone calls and conferences nipped many problems in the bud. The cost for maintaining order in the classroom was essentially $0 and maintained tolerable discipline sufficiently tolerable to attract good teachers. These days it costs the taxpayers a bundle to preserve the illusion of safe schools and the quality of education isn't any better. Every school has a "safe school plan" with surveys, goals, objectives, and evaluations that takes time to construct and maintain. Some of these things can fill a small library! Often, they cannot be effectively maintained without the aid of computers and "voluntary" teacher manpower at the expense of more productive instructional or lesson preparation time. Then, there are the every helpful outside consultants who often come with a ridiculous price tag. Although not usually directly billed to schools, there is the cost of psychotropic drugs administered to small boys. Some have been linked to suicide, murder, and sometimes-bizarre behavior. The long-term effects and costs of these largely experimental drugs are unknown. There are also the guards and cops roaming the halls. They come with cars, uniforms, weapons, computers, salaries, healthcare, pensions, and other costs that must be eventually born by the taxpayer. Likewise, there is the proliferation of spy cameras, video equipment, fences with barbed wire tops, locks, gates, guard houses, and the like that come at taxpayer expense. Some school districts have OKed the use of potentially deadly Tasers to inflict pain on students in order to bring them into compliance. The situation is so bad that some critics of pubic education have described it as a mandatory 13-year prison sentence for the crime of being born American! Others have claimed the goal of schools has become to sufficiently dumb down the population to prepare them to live in a police state that exploits them for their cheap labor as adults. As with many police chiefs, principals often feel forced downgrade incidents to maintain the illusion of control. Some incidents are overlooked entirely. Others, like 5-year-old boys charged with sexual harassment, are exaggerated to make political hay for the resident feminist political officer. All of this, and more, have replaced the lowly paddle. It is not sustainable. The zoo under the surface is waiting to be released. |

I'm not so sure it's just a diatribe.
People are fed up. Those that can move their kids to private schools. Homeschooling is growing! And the homeschoolers I know spank. |

If you have a child in public school, ask to see the school's "safe
school plan" or equivalent. Be warned. You may be denied access. These comprehensive documents contain objectives, goals, and strategies for coping with various difficulties. By the time you wade through one of these sometimes bewildering maze of resource consumption activities, it becomes obvious why schools have problems getting 8 years of achievement into 12 years of compulsory schooling. There is an old Arab saying that the camel is a horse designed by a committee! The "safe school plan" usually fits that description. While you' re at it, ask how much the school or school district paid the consultant for his or her contribution. Absent bureaucratic jargon and public relations fluff, exactly what did this person do? Ask to see their recommendations. This is you tax money. Know where it is going. What you may discover is that far too many educational professionals have been educated beyond their cerebral capacities. wrote: I'm not so sure it's just a diatribe. People are fed up. So why not post one here and let people decide for themselves by subjecting it to debate? You afraid to? Yep, thought so. 0:- wrote: I'm not so sure it's just a diatribe. People are fed up. At what cost safe schools
At least two public schools have had incidents
where girls were lined up and given GYNOS at school, to "screen for sexual abuse". Ever wonder what the payouts were on those law suits? Why isn't there more public outcry that such public issues are kept quiet by secretive settlements and sealed records? Wouldn't it benefit the public good if such terrible wrongs were publicly exposed? And the settlements too? |

Ever wonder what the payouts were on those law suits? I'll bet you do ... a lot. Why isn't there more public outcry that such public issues are kept quiet by secretive settlements and sealed records? Oh, possibly because of privacy issues for the victims? And then there is the small detail you might have overlooked: Unless it was made public in some manner, you wouldn't know about it. 0:- Wouldn't it benefit the public good if such terrible wrongs were publicly exposed? And the settlements too? Sure. Your prurient interest is duly noted. Both as to the sexual nature of your interest, and where you have shown even more lust ... The Money. Say, how's the suit against the state of Iowa for removing the little girl wrongfully coming along? Or did you have some other complaint you were suing for, like your terrible inconvenience/ 0:- -- "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Opinions and Reality, was At what cost safe schools
Opinions said " All of this, and more, have replaced the lowly paddle.
It is not sustainable. The zoo under the surface is waiting to be released." Opinions, you once again write an opinion. You have a great on-line name. The schools using "the lowly paddle" have the highest rates of school violence, including homicide. It doesn't appear that the paddle is so much lowly as lethal. And even in states that do not permit school paddling, children committing the most violent crimes disporportunately come from homes where corporal punishment is present. Of course, you would know this is you read rather than relying on opinion.
