15 YEAR OLD BEATS 1 YEAR OLD BROTHER INTO COMA

A 15-year-old boy might be prosecuted in adult court after
being charged Tuesday with assaulting his 13-month-old cousin.

The teen appeared in Pierce County juvenile court, where he was
charged with one count of first-degree assault and ordered
detained in Remann Hall until a court hearing Dec. 24.

A decision on whether his case will remain in the juvenile
system or be sent to adult court is to be made at that time,
deputy prosecutor Chris Conant said.

The teen has yet to enter a plea.

The younger boy suffered serious injuries Monday and was
admitted to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Health Center,
where he was connected to a breathing tube, according to court
records.

Tacoma police detectives believe the teen might have thrown the
child up into the air and let him fall to the ground, court
records state. There is also evidence the child was shaken
violently, according to the records.

Detectives began investigating the teen after he called 911 to
report his cousin sick.

Firefighters responding to the house in the 1700 block of South
45th Street found the child unconscious and not breathing,
according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by
prosecutors.

They called police because the injuries seemed suspicious, the
affidavit states.

The teen originally told police he’d been on the telephone in
another room before finding his cousin on the floor with his
legs outstretched and bubbles coming from his mouth, according
to court records.

He later admitted throwing the child into the air and shaking
him, the records state.

The teen told detectives he lives in New Mexico but has been
visiting Tacoma for last five weeks to look after his cousin
while the child’s parents work, according to court documents.

The teen had been scheduled to return to New Mexico on Friday,
the documents state.
