Default REAL-ending 1970s "Little Mermaid" cartoons

I found them on YouTube!

(Keep in mind, for those who don't know the story, that MANY Andersen
fairy tales - and Northern European tales in general - have
bittersweet endings. Take "The Little Match Girl"......)

1975 Richard Chamberlain/Reader's Digest half-hour version (would you
agree the animation style is Russian?):

(parts 1, 2, and 3)

Tomoharu Katsumata/Tim Reid anime version in 8 parts (more than an
hour long, total):

They're both on video, but maybe not on DVD - I couldn't find them on
Netflix, anyway. The former is arguably superior (it even mentions the
mermaid's desire for an immortal soul, which a mermaid can only get
from marriage to a human), but the anime version is a no-fail
tearjerker.

Lenona.
