[META] Google goofiness
I know, I know. I should just get a real newsreader.
Anyway, I've noticed that us Googlers can't see our own posts through...well...Google. There is a thread out there that was started by a Googler and I can't see the original, plus I've posted myself, had the post accepted and I can't see the post. I've also had others respond to my unseen posts. In my case at least, I've not used x-no-archive. Likely Google has changed something - again. *sigh* Even though I post only about once every couple of months, I'd like to be able to see myself. Can the moderators do anything about this or is there something I can change? Any input would be helpful. Thanks! - Bev - a Usenet vampire, unable to see her reflection |

The same happened when I used other recent messages posted through google, from other people. I could display messages from last August. -- Penny Gaines UK mum to three |

I can see you, but it is awfully frustrating when you can't see some of us! I don't have any suggestions for you other than the free german server, but that may not work for your situation. Hang in there, someone else is bound to have a suggestion. -Aula, not googling -- see my creative works on ebay under http://snurl.com/369o and on zazzle at http://snurl.com/38oh |

FWIW, I also checked on another (unmoderated) ng and I found a google-post there was visible on google. So maybe it's problem with this ng, or moderated ngs in general. Nick I can see myself just fine in misc.kids. So I think it's a moderation thing, but quite likely more a combination of moderation and Google. I don't know if anyone answers the phone at Google - so to speak - but the moderation staff might want to look into this. Or not. Considering it is just Google, it might not be worth it. I'm vain, you know. I want to see my own work! - Bev |

This makes me feel better - I posted a couple of messages awhile ago, never saw them, and just assumed that for some reason the moderators nixed them! (I suppose I'll never see this one, either...) We had another poster some time ago who brought this to our attention -- and that person *works* at Google, and still couldn't find a fix. It doesn't seem to be anything we're doing on our end. I periodically have to post through Google when my own ISP goes flaky. Because of the delay, though, I routinely *read* posts on a web-based server (News2Web) that lets me see what's there (Google and all) even though I can't post through it. So I can verify that you can see the Google posts elsewhere. Just not at Google. --Robin a moderator, but speaking for myself |

But I don't think there's much if anything that can be done about it. One thing I have noticed is that the NNTP-Posting-Host header that Google adds to provide a level of poster accountability gets lost/removed/replaced when the post goes through the (our?) moderation process, and it's possible that their software objects to this change when it sees the post arrive to be archived/posted there. I suppose that *if* this is the problem, there may be some way we can modify our moderation software to avoid it. --Robyn A moderator, speculating for herself |
