Polk sheriff visits D. C. to fight foster-care cuts

April 6, 2005

Polk County Sheriff Robert Wolfe and other Oregon law enforcement
officials were in Washington, D. C., on
Tuesday to fight a proposed foster-care cut.

They asked Oregon Sens. Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith to oppose a
foster-care-reform bill pushed by a
California Republican. Smith and Wyden sit on the financing committee
that would consider the bill.

Republicans in Congress want to shift the focus of foster care to
prevention, but Oregon sheriffs and police
chiefs say that the plan would cut a hole in the net that saves
children from parents who use
methamphetamine.
