Folic Acid
In article , Amy wrote:
It's my understanding that the recommended dosage is 300mcg. We buy it in 300mcg tabs here in NZ. If you take too much (and I'm not sure what too much is here) it _may_ cause calcification of the placenta, according to my OB. Not a good thing if you're at risk of placental problems already, as I am. How far are you? You know, you will probably be fine just with the multi alone, they fortify virtually everything with folic acid now, breads, cereals, spreads etc. In the US the RDA is 400mcg for adult women and 600mcg for pregnant women. There are some dangers associated with excess folic acid supplemention. Chief among them is that excess folic acid can mask the symptoms of b12 deficiency. The recommended maxium synthetic folate (folic acid) intake in the US is 1mg (1000mcg) daily. However - adding a b-12 supplement offsets the risk of exceeding the recommended maximum dose. Obviously, discuss your suplements with your OB/midwife because individual health issues will affect the supplements that are appropriate for a given situation. Elaine |
