More teenagers seek help from psychiatrists

Excerpts:

The number of youths suffering from mental health seems to be on the
rise but that's because teenagers are becoming more aware of the help
avenues open to them, experts and social workers told TODAY.

Mental health problems refer to a broad range of issues that can
encompass emotional or internalising disorders, such as stress and
depression, and behavioural or externalising disorders, such as
violence, aggressiveness and conduct disorders.

At the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Dr Daniel Fung, deputy chief
and consultant psychiatrist of the department of child and adolescent
psychiatry, said that while in the past IMH used to see about 30 per
cent of teenagers with mental health issues, the numbers have now
increased to 40 per cent.

But he said this rise could be due to teenagers becoming more aware of
avenues for them to work out their problems.

The National University Hospital (NUH) has seen mostly teenagers
suffering from depression, adjustment disorders (to stresses and
transitions in their lives), eating and conduct disorders and Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

"For example, they may not know how to deal with their anger in a
healthy way. This results in them being defiant to their parents,
teachers and people in authority. Some of them have also expressed
dislike for rules, even though they know it is necessary," she said.

[ They did not learn to deal with their anger at an *early age*, as in
every day a little at a time. The rules were not there. They falsely
were called child abuse.]

Generally, it does seem that more teenagers nowadays are displaying
symptoms of mental health issues compared to before, said Ms Poh.

[ Propagranda to sell drugs. This is NOT mental health issues, it comes
from the NO discipline Dr Spock crap.]

The lack of attention from parents may contribute to some of their
attention seeking behaviours as teenagers also need to be heard and
given attention. On the other hand, parents who are overindulgent and
permissive may also affect the development of the teenager as they may
not learn to respect authority figures," said Ms Poh.

[ Propagranda to sell drugs. This is NOT mental health issues, it comes

Jan is now censoring an article because she does not want people to see
the whole story. Like I said, JAN IS AFRAID OF THE TRUTH!

"Most of the teenagers we see are not able to meet up to their academic
expectations (of their parents and or teachers). This affects their
self-perception, and one way of coping may be to become defiant. It can
also be a form of escape so that they can feel good about themselves,
and in control of other areas in their lives."

Daniel Koh, a psychologist in private practice, explained that nowadays,
teenagers are more result- or achievement-oriented, and set unrealistic
expectations for themselves.

"This can be made worse if there are expectations from other sources,
such as parents, peers and school.

"Teenagers are also moving from caring for others to individualism, and
they are more willing to engage in sexual and boy-girl relationships
without fully understanding the consequences. Teenagers also sometimes
feel that others judge them by what they can achieve or have rather than
their personality. So, if you have nothing to show to others, you are
considered to be a nobody," he said.

Perhaps, what might be a little alarming, is that since last year, the
Singapore Children's Society has been observing more kids -- some as
young as nine, 10 and 11 years old, behaving like teenagers and
displaying behavioural problems that one could classify as mental health
issues, said Carol Balhetchet, director of youth development and a
senior counsellor there.

The kids that the Singapore Children's Society has been seeing more and
more of are angrier and more uncontrollable, said Ms Balhetchet.

"Some are constantly stealing, and running away from home. Some also
self-mutilate. It's a way for them to externalise their feelings.
Sometimes, it's a way of getting attention. Since they are young, they
are more immature and they cannot verbalise their thoughts and feelings
as effectively as the older teens. It makes it more difficult to
communicate with them," she said.

Many of these children are interacting with older peers, said Ms
Balhetchet. "They are probably influenced by them. The media also plays
a role."

Which is what Mr Wang Kim Meng, deputy executive director and youth
worker with the Youth Guidance Outreach Services said, could explain the
rise in teenagers with mental health problems.

"They have more connections with movie and fictional characters than
real ones," he lamented. "There's a lack of connection with parents and
other positive role models."

The interaction between parent and teenagers, starting from the time
they are children, affects teenage development.

Jan's other problem with this is that the above does not blame the
parents, which is what Jan believes causes these problems.

The lack of attention from parents may contribute to some of their
attention seeking behaviours as teenagers also need to be heard and
given attention. On the other hand, parents who are overindulgent and
permissive may also affect the development of the teenager as they may
not learn to respect authority figures," said Ms Poh.

The increased use of stimulants and their ability to transfer harm from one
person to another by a mind/body connection whether near or far, is the
reason for increase of mental and physical problems with teens, babies born
to mothers on stimulants, small children with IBD, college students, adults,
seniors, and possible with everyone, is the hidden reason for our society

Mark,

Can you read or think correctly. Do you know the 7 year old in Hawaii
that took a 5mg Ritalin.
There Must be a MIND connection. or everyone everywhere would be
affected by anyone on a stimulant. Do you know the difference. The
theory makes more sense than you do.
But I read a fable in an ancient story, that a woman was destined to be a
prophetess telling the truth, but this other person condemned her to not be
believed. A ring of truth.
You tell me, would it not be better for the child not to have to take
Ritalin. That is in the power of the actions of the parents. Can't
go further. You are educated, far beyond me, totele, but all things do
not come to all persons, not in the science field or in the realm of the
actual world. There are mysteries we can observe and never know the
reason why they work as they do. How is your migraine. What do you
take for it. The answer might be there.

As Jan seems quite prepared to follow the teachings of the

that this is somehow a problem.
