Default Will / Can my toddler's red hair change color?

Neither my wife nor I have red hair so we were really surprised when
our daughter was born with red hair. She's now 18 months and it's
still red. My mom says my hair was red when I was a baby and then it
went blonde and then brown and now it's very dark. So we're debating
if our daughter's hair will change color or not. Everyone loves her
red hair so we're hoping it doesn't change.

Sure. My dd was born with near black hair and is now as platinum as platinum
can be. Ds was born dark, turned white blonde for about two years and now
he's dirty blonde.

My husband has light brown hair and I have dark brown hair -- I'm half
Japanese. We were beyond shocked when our first son was born with
bright red hair -- turns out there are a few great-great-great aunts
on both sides who had red hair, but we didn't know about them until
Micah popped out. He's 2 1/2 and it's still red, so we'll see!!

we have the exact same situation, our daughter also has red hair and
neither of us do, but nor did we as children, we keep thinking her hair
is changing colour, but it never actually does, I guess she will keep us
guessing for a few more years!

Ann, how old is your daughter?

Do you get comments all the time about her "beautiful hair"?

I have very dark brown hair (thick and wavy), my husband's is kind of a
dark blonde/light brown (thin and wispy). Our first son had virtually no
hair until around 21 months or so, and when it finally started to grow
in, it was red and curly. We were very surprised, and kept asking people
"does his hair look red to you?" because we were sure we were seeing
things. He is now seven, and while his hair is not as curly, it is
thick and wavy and a beautiful rich red that some women pay hundreds of
dollars to try and duplicate! Anyway, there is red hair on both sides of
the family, but at least a few generations back.

Our second son was born with hair as dark as mine, and by age 3, it
turned the color and texture of my husband's, which is very common color
on his father's side of the family.

Hi Karen thanks for sharing your experience which is very encouraging
for me. Several women have even made the same comment that they pay
to have our daughter's hair color! (And many more who don't admit
it). We're expecting our second daughter in August and everyone is
wondering if she'll have the same red hair.

Hi Em, my wife is half Chinese so like you, saying we were surprised
was an understatement! My wife says when she's out in public with
out daughter that people were thinking she was the babysitter!

I'm glad after 2 1/2 years it's still red, very encouraging!

Daughter #1 has red hair and at this point, I am sure it will stay the same.
She is 14 yrs old. However, we have red hair in our family. Your child's
hair may change or it might not. DD1's hair is very curly and has been since
she was a baby. Everyone comments on her hair and even asked when she was a
baby if I had it permed, lol. People are funny.

I'm a red head. As a baby it was this glow-in-the-dark-fire-orange. The
older I got the darker it got. While it's still red, it's no where near as
bright as it was when I was a baby. My brother had the same baby hair, now
he is a blond.
In our family we were pretty much all born red heads, it seems that the ones
w/ blue or hazle eyes keep it, the kids w/ the brown and dark brown eyes get
dark.
I'm still not sure how my brother ended up blond

I have two really curly headed children. People used to ask me if I
had it permed too. My SIL has the same type of hair, and her mom said
that after she had one of the childhood diseases where she had a high
fever that the hair straightened out briefly.

Also while my dd#1 had out of control curly hair, dd#2 had straighter
hair which got sun bleached in the summer in streaks. People asked me
if I'd bleached it. I always thought that people must think I was way
more into hair products than I was - I had waist length hair that I
wore in a bun which should have been a clue. Why would I perm one
child and not the other? Why bleach one and not the other?

I thought I was the only one who had a dark haired child where the
hair turned blond!!

My DD, too. She was born with dark hair, then when she was a couple months
old it all fell out and grew back blonde.
Now that she is 10, it is getting darker and darker again.
