How does and can one parent effectively these days?
Back in my day in the 1980's Cell Phones, PDA's, GameBoys, Play
Stations, X-boxes, Home PC's, Laptops, and the Internet was almost non existent in the home. I have to wonder how many more kids are being diagnosed as an ADD/ADHD client than in my day. And I wonder how kids can study with all the added distractions of this entertainment driven generation. Back in my day I read books, played Marbles, ventured into nature, rode bikes, and did so many things I am afraid many kids no longer enjoy. Choose Your Own Adventure was a children's book series of the 1980's that would never sell in todays market. Instead of wasting countless hours in front of a computer I read books which I doubt many children would chose over using a computer these days. Is it good that kids would rather read on their computers over reading a traditional book? I fear great danger with this new generation. Were people ever adicted to reading books though? They sure can get adicted to the internet and video games. |

In his case, though, he is obsessive about stuyding and reading. I have seen him cross a highway with his face in a book. |

My mom used to tell me to turn down the beans after 15 minutes, and I would answer but I would get involved in the book and she'd come back in half an hour to a house full of smoke and burnt beans. She used to kick me outside to 'get some fresh air'. I used to read under the bedcovers, and I will still stay up until the wee hours of the morning to finish a book. grandma Rosalie |

No, I did not hear it first hand. "The young people of today love luxury. They have bad manners, they scoff at authority and lack respect for their elders. Children nowadays are really tyrants, they no longer stand up when their elders come into the room where they are sitting, they contradict their parents, chat together in the presence of adults, eat gluttonously and tyrannise their teachers." -- Socrates |

They were violent, visual, and all in all 'Not A Good Thing' according to my 1950's siblings. Kids would spend money on comic books, collect hundreds of these things, act out what was portrayed, and prefer to hang out reading them versus engaging in more 'wholesome' activities. I believe that video games are the comic books of today. And I don't think either of these items are necessarily bad. Caledonia |

I do remember books, especially fiction, being considered a possibly addictive distraction, and being discouraged. Banty |
