Third: When I write "Computer Science" it's for the lack of a better

term.
Our Computer Science Department do research into the fringe areas of the

use
of computers. The word in Danish is "Datalogi" - the study of data. What
should I call it?

Applied mathematics. :-) (If you mean Turing machines and information
theory and such, that is.)

I do - among a lot of other subjects.

Nah, you're talking about informatics - see e.g.
http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/about/

"Informatics is the study of the structure, behaviour, and interactions of
both natural and engineered computational systems."

Oooh. Interesting. I was unaware that you actually had a department!
I was under the impression that it was completely interdepartmental
at this point. (DH does philosophy of mind as a secondary focus.)

I agree that some informatics is applied mathematics, but not all
informatics is based on mathematics (and of course, mathematics can be
applied to things other than computational systems).

What else would you say informatics is based on? I'm just curious.

Engineering is all about "doing" -
creating practical uses for scientific knowledge; science is all about
discovering new knowledge.

does.

Have you ever tasted the Danish Herrings? They are not bad. We have stuff
much more discusting: How about sausage made mostly of pig blood (blood
sausage, it's called). Or how about a soupy-porridgy dish made of beer,
ryebread and sugar (Øllebrød meaning beer-bread). It's brown, liquid and is
served with whipped cream. The first i don't touch - the second I'll eat
when it's served. Both are favorites of DH, DS and DD :-)

Black pudding (your blood sausage) is /wonderful/. It goes very nicely
with haggis, actually!

Haggis is a Scottish delicacy - oats, herbs, spices, suet, onion and
liver cooked in a sheep's stomach. Yes, I know it doesn't /sound/ like
a delicacy but really, it's lovely.
