Barium Swallow Study/bottle
"Mary W." wrote in message oups.com... DD1 wasn't a big bottle drinker, but she needed to because I work out of the home. The bottle that worked best for us was the playtex nurser system, with the disposable bags. That way, we could get the nipple in her mouth and the squeeze the bag to kind of squirt the milk in her mouth. We never could get more than 2-4 ounces in her, but it was enough so that she wasn't starving while I was gone. And, since this is a one time thing, you certainly could try a faster nipple, see if he's happier with it. Thank you, Mary, you have some great suggestions. I think I will have to purchase some new nipples. Other things that helped: We'd prop DD up in her carseat, turn on baby einstien and feed her that way. If she was distracted, she was more likely to eat, and she did better if she was propped up. Another thing to try is covering his eyes with a cloth diaper - if he doesn't see the bottle, maybe he'll be less antagonistic to it. And if you are around, he probably wont want it. I will have to try these. Try different temperatures of milk. DD1 wanted the milk surprisingly (to me) warm. And you said he didn't care for your thawed milk, have you tried fresh or just refrigerated? If he doesn't like that , does your milk taste/smell soapy? It could be a lipase problem (helped by scalding your milk as soon as you pump it). Also, since this isn't going to be a regular thing, you could try formula or even, perhaps, some watered down juice to see if that goes over better. I did try the milk fresh one day and just refrigerated another time. Today I tried it thawed and warmed up. He was pretty sick when I tried it the first two times, so I kinda gave up this weekend. I didn't think of the lipase problem. I'll have to go check that out. I might try the formula and have hubby pick it up tonight. Thanks again, Mary, you've been a big help!! -- Joy Rose 1-99 Iris 2-01 Spencer 3-03 Grant 9-05 |

I'm a long-time lurker, and I have four children. My fourth was born with spina bifida at the end of September (he's almost 4 months), and along with that came some other stuff. He has Arnold-Chiari Malformation Type II, and it can affect swallowing and cause aspiration. He's been exclusively breastfed, and he took quite well to it. I haven't bothered with a bottle, but now he needs to have a barium swallow test on Wednesday. I've been trying since last Thursday to get him to take an avent bottle with breastmilk with no success. I need some tips on how to get him to take a bottle. Do I need to try a different bottle? Different nipple ( I think this is a newborn, slower-flow one)? He can't have latex exposure, so it can only be a silicone nipple. Would he take formula better? My hubby and daughter have had no success in getting him to take the bottle either. I had trouble getting my son to take a bottle too. I got an Adiri Breastbottle Nurser & I really like it. Seems much more like breastfeeding. http://www.babysupermall.com/main/pr.../adi42443.html Good luck. rj |

Joybelle wrote: Thanks for the reply! I was told he'd need to take a bottle for the contrast solution as breasts just did not work to get the contrast solution into him. LOL We are tracking how he swallows and where it goes because of the chiari. Sure they will - you just need one of these: http://www.positivelybreastfeeding.c...eeding/SNS.htm I did NOT pay that much for mine - I think it was $12 or $15. It has a much smaller resevoir. Check with whoever rents pumps in your town - in our town, it's a particular grocery store chain, and they carry all the SNSes, the pumps, etc. It might be the hospital. Anyway, you put the barium in the resevoir, you tape the tube (it's really small and flexible) to your nipple, you latch him on, and away you go. Amy |

I don't know what the barium will taste like, I had to swallow die for a CT
once and though it wasn't unpleasant it was significantly different from anything else that I'd think however compliant a child was it would have been a struggle. I think you need more details of the volume he needs and then consider SNS, syringe, as well as other nipples, but I honestly think, that even if he was an angel with a bottle that he'd probably still not tolerate something different coming out of it. We could never trick Nathanael by mixing stuff with milk, or orange juice, giving things on there own was easier because there was less volume, though sadly at a certain range of ages it was a case of pinning him down. No experience here Joy, but all the best! I'm glad BF is going so well for Grant. He may be going through a lot, but I think it's wonderful that for all the nasty objects he may have prodded at him, he has the constant comfort of your breast. That must give him a lot of security in a scary world. -- Amy Mum to Carlos born sleeping 20/11/02, & Ana born screaming 30/06/04 http://www.freewebs.com/carlos2002/ http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/a/ana%5Fj%5F2004/ My blog: http://spaces.msn.com/members/querer-hijo-querer-hija/ |

As you can imagine, dogs and cats often will not willingly eat the
barium-contaminated food I mix up for them if I want to get an esophagram or gastrogram. But I find that if I put the barium in a syringe and squirt it into their mouths while wrapping their faces in a towel to catch any stray drips so as not to get it all over their fur - enough generally goes down that I can get a decent picture. So, you know - what happens if you syringe a little liquid into his mouth? Surely not ALL of it comes back out? -- Hillary Israeli, VMD Lafayette Hill/PA/USA/Earth "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it is too dark to read." --Groucho Marx |

When I spoke to the NP yesterday, she said they'd try the bottle first (that's when he gags and spits the most), but I've gotten pretty darn good at getting his antibiotics down with a syringe. I guess we'll see if I'm right tomorrow. Thanks for the input, Hillary! -- Joy Rose 1-99 Iris 2-01 Spencer 3-03 Grant 9-05 |

That is one thing I stressed about before he was born because I worried the whole breastfeeding thing would be sabotaged.
