Default couple things - should I worry?

DS2's been doing a couple things I've been wondering whether I should
worry about, so I thought I'd ask here if they were common.

Firstly, he sometimes seems to aspirate the milk, when he's eating.
He'll be eating, and then pull off and coughs, definitely sounding like
he swallowed wrong. It doesn't happen every time, only once every 3 or
4 days, but I haven't been able to detect a pattern. Not, like, when
he's sleepy, or when I'm experiencing a strong letdown, or anything.

Secondly, sometimes when he's eating and sleepy, in the middle of
nursing, he'll tense up and shake, looking very much like the seizures
our dog gets sometimes. Is it just a weird muscle/sleepy thing, or
should I talk to his Dr. about seizures?

Both of these things are not very serious at all, as far as I can tell,
I just find them strange enough to wonder.

DD2 used to choke a bit and spit up quite a bit. DD1 didn't do either
so she had me wondering for awhile. She did outgrow both, certainly
by the time she was one, but I think it was before that..

DD1 had a wierd thing that used to happen to her when she
was tired. It was very quick, kind of a pause or a jerk. We
were able to catch it on video so the doctor could see it.
It was pretty subtle, but enough to warrent an EEG. They
suspected that it was something she'd outgrow and she
did by the time she was one. They attributed it to an
immature nervous system (I think they called in myoclonic
jerks). It was nothing, but we felt better after talking to the
doctor about it.

Probably worth a mention, do you have a 6 month appointment
coming up? If you can catch the seizure-thing on videa, that
would help them alot.

Good luck,

Hi Cheri,

My DD did this when she was a couple of weeks old - freaked me right out!
Although she only seemed to do it with the bottle, but she seemed to get a
lungful of milk, and then blew it all out. She's not on bottles anymore, but
sometimes she still chokes on her milk but think it's cos she's a gutsy
girl who rushes her food!

I can't help much there I'm afraid - I've got narcolepsy and DD is being
investigated for it, so freaky sleep is normal in our house!

Both of these things are not very serious at all, as far as I can tell,

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but thought I would mention about DD's eating
habits

Well, my DD didn't do these things, and my DS has issues with breathing
and stuff already, but I thought I'd weigh in here. DS does this
during virtually every daytime nurse. I generally pull him off and
burp him (somehow, I feel like he does it when he has gotten a bit
gassy) and then resume nursing. DS has had both an Upper GI and a
swallow study for his other problems, and they've said his swallow is
normal. He's also had washings done of his trachea (again, for his
other problems, not this), and they show no aspiration. Everyone I've
asked -- his pulmonologist, the speech pathologist that looked at his
swallow, etc -- says the "swallowing wrong" thing is no big deal and
would not have even thought twice about it if it weren't for all his
other issues.

In a nutshell, I wouldn't worry at all.

Secondly, sometimes when he's eating and sleepy, in the middle of

Again, DD didn't do this and DS has other issues, but I have noticed DS
doing this a few times. I think each time was when he was crying or
coughing, so he was agitated, not drowsy. But he'd tense up his legs
and then they'd just kind of shake violently for about 3-5 seconds. We
asked his specialists about that since we weren't sure if it was
related to anything, and they said it was nothing to worry about. When
I thought about it, My hands make a similar motion after violent
coughing or vomitting, so he probably inherited it from me.

Hope that helps!
