My third-grade teacher (Miss Levine) had a cure for hiccups. The rule in
her room was, if you had hiccups, you were allowed to raise your hand and
come to the front of the room, and after you hiccuped to prove you weren't
faking, she would give you a glass of water, which you were to drink from
the opposite side of the rim. In all seriousness, it was the rare, rare
kid who was able to "prove" he or she had hiccups. For the most part, the
hiccups would go away when you walked to the front of the room!

I drink from the other side of the glass. I don't know if you can get
Aurora to do that though.

This is my cure for myself, but Aurora (and even Julian) can't manage it
just yet.

Keep working on it. My older two (now 7 and 10) have been able to do this
for a while and think it is the greatest thing. I'm pretty sure they learned
aroudn 4 or 5.

My daughter gets the hiccups on the order of 3-5 times per day. They seem
particularly likely to come on if she starts crying for any reason. She's
old enough now that they bother her. I can usually cure them by giving her a
teaspoon of sugar (drinking water doesn't seem to help), but I hate to do
that on a regular basis. Any other similar remedies for hiccups (or ways to
prevent them) that anyone's willing to share?

I have a hiccupy kid too, and our pediatrican taught us a pretty cool
trick that makes them go away instantly. It doesn't involve drinking
or sugar or anything.

All you do is put your mouth completely over her open mouth and breath
out in one strong breath. It closes the flap that is left open to
create the hiccups and they just disappear. It evidentally hurts a
bit, but it's less annoying than the constant hic hic hic.

Let me know if it works for you.
