Correcting the above quoted error on your history page will segue nicely
into my understanding of Dr. DD Palmer's chiropractic (DD-straight
chiropractic).

The title "The Chiropractor's Adjustment" which you attribute to Dr. DD
Palmer is neither the title (nor the subtitle) of DD's 1910 text The
Science, Art, and Philosophy of Chiropractic.

DD subtitled his 1910 text, The Chiropractor's ADJUSTER (emphasis added)...

I'm *pretty* sure DD subtitled his 1910 text The Chiropractors ADJUSTER -
because his son BJ Palmer's magazine was The Chiropractor. (See "tracing The
Chiropractor," below.)

DD's The Chiropractor's ADJUSTER was DD's literary adjusting device to
describe his non-spinal adjustment of non-spinal subluxations in BJ's
thinking.

For example, DD delivered CRUCIAL non-spinal adjustments to BJ when this
ostensible "Developer" of chiropractic - threw out the sympathetic nervous
system and installed "Direct Mental Impulse." (!)

The sympathetic nervous system was troublesome to BJ because it meant
"pinching" of spinal nerves could not possibly be the cause of all disease.
The part of DD's book where he describes BJ finally putting back the
sympathetic nervous system has to be the funniest part of DD's 1910 text. I
personally believe BJ's hilarious sympathetic nervous system tossing
stupidity was what later led BJ to attempt to drive the entire chiropractic
profession into adjusting mostly the top two vertebrae (to relieve CORD
pressure) and leasing from BJ (of course) BJ's upper cervical subluxation
detection equipment!

NOTE: BJ-"straight"-like behavior in medicine: British obstetrician Jason
Gardosi, MD threw out the fundamental human rest and delivery posture called
squatting in his 1989 Lancet "randomised controlled trial of squatting" -
where nobody squatted. (!) More on Gardosi below...

DD discussed his diagnosis of his son BJ's "Developer" LUXATION:

On p. 752, DD wrote (this is FUNNY!):

"I have analyzed the symptoms, and am now tracing The Chiropractor [BJ's
journal, originally founded by DD - TDG] in order to locate the luxation
causing aberration and kleptomania. I find on page 15 of the July number,
'Everything is tried but the right thing-adjusting the cause-which remained
for D. D. Palmer to discover.' In this same number is advertised, 'The
Science of Chiropractic, by Dr. D. D. Palmer, Discoverer and Developer.' Up
to this date every vertebra examined showed proper alignment; due respect
was paid by the son to his father for his untiring research from the time B.
J., the son, was seven years of age up to three years ago. If the symptoms
of aberration and kleptomania continue to increase, some number of the
Chiropractor in the near future will give the date of the father's
graduation as later than that of his son...I have found the luxation on page
59 of the August and September number, 1907. It shows symptoms of
aberration, hallucination, mental wandering, divergence from the truth and a
well-defined case of kleptomania. The reader may notice the mental
derangement, the incoherent, disjointed expressions, that have little
relation to the subject; the delusions of the patient [BJ], imagining
himself to be the discoverer, developer and Founder of Chiropractic...It is
to be hoped that this adjustment may bring [BJ] to his senses, relieve him
from kleptomania and wandering from the paths of truth and moral rectitude."

Whereas BJ called himself the "Developer" of chiropractic, DD called BJ "the
enveloper" [1910:701]

PSYCHIC (CHIROPRACTIC) ADJUSTING: Adjusting "the organ of thought and
judgement"

I have previously called non-spinal (educational) adjusting - PSYCHIC
(chiropractic) adjusting...

(The word psychic was used by the late WD Harper, DC in Anything Can Cause
Anything: A Correlation of Dr. DD Palmer's Principles of Chiropractic [3rd
ed., 1974]; and it appeared in my definition of chiropractic in Dorland's
Illustrated Medical Dictionary [1988, 1994, 2000])

According to Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary:

PSYCHIC: pertaining to the psyche or to the mind; mental [psyche - a Greek

"The basic function of the nervous system is to connect a receptor to an

D.D. stated the same concept:

"Nerves have but two functions - conveying

D.D. openly indicated that all healing arts of his day employed a
diagnostic/treatment concept that was identical to his Innate
diagnostic trick...

known as Hahneman's Vital Force; New Thought's Divine Spark; Hudson's

Oddly (at least to me)...

Which reminds me...

Dorland's 29th edition defines spirit as "liquid": 1. any volatile or
distilled liquid. 2. a solution of volatile material in alcohol...

DD's INNATE (SPIRITUAL) DIAGNOSTIC TRICK...

DD advised (note: I'm LOOSELY paraphrasing DD via WD Harper's Anything Can
Cause Anything):

ASSUME Innate is irritating the nervous system trying to cause health...

If the patient is sick - something ELSE - something
identifiable/diagnosable - is irritating the nervous system to cause
disease...

FIRST identify and adjust mech/chem/psychic subluxations in the external
environment.

SECOND identify and adjust subluxations in the internal environment; keeping
in mind the possibility that external environmental irritation has altered
the internal environment to cause it to noxiously irritate ITSELF via:

a) secondary MECHANICAL irritants ("vertebral subluxations");

b) secondary CHEMICAL irritants (unsuitable ingesta or inappropriate
medications);

c) secondary PSYCHIC irritants ("mental impingements"/outside minds that
perpetuate a and b).

RB Livingston, MD alludes to these "secondaries" in the 1985 edition of Best
and Taylor's
Physiologic Basis of Medical Practice:

"Aware of sensory physiology, you will readily retain the following
practical principles: First, many processes intervene between stimulation
of peripheral receptors and higher perceptual centers...There needs to be a
leavening of self-doubt in the physician's mind as to the possibility of as
yet unrecognized and as yet undiscovered sensory intrusions that may also be
contributing influentially to the patient's perceptual experiences."

Again - if a person is diseased - something ELSE (besides Innate) - some
DIAGNOSABLE noxious
mechanical, chemical and/or psychic irritant - in the internal OR external
environment - is irritating the nervous system and may be
identified/diagnosed using a knowledge of the nervous system
(hence the current Dorland's definition of chiropractic: "a science of
applied neurophysiologic diagnosis...").

"I have analyzed the symptoms, and am now tracing The Chiropractor [BJ's
journal, originally founded by DD - TDG] in order to locate the luxation
causing aberration and kleptomania. I find on page 15 of the July number,

to this date every vertebra examined showed proper alignment; due respect
was paid by the son to his father for his untiring research from the time

J., the son, was seven years of age up to three years ago. If the symptoms
of aberration and kleptomania continue to increase, some number of the
Chiropractor in the near future will give the date of the father's
graduation as later than that of his son...I have found the luxation on
page
59 of the August and September number, 1907. It shows symptoms of
aberration, hallucination, mental wandering, divergence from the truth and
a
well-defined case of kleptomania. The reader may notice the mental
derangement, the incoherent, disjointed expressions, that have little
relation to the subject; the delusions of the patient [BJ], imagining
himself to be the discoverer, developer and Founder of Chiropractic...It
is
to be hoped that this adjustment may bring [BJ] to his senses, relieve him
from kleptomania and wandering from the paths of truth and moral
rectitude."

Whereas BJ called himself the "Developer" of chiropractic, DD called BJ
"the
enveloper" [1910:701]

PSYCHIC (CHIROPRACTIC) ADJUSTING: Adjusting "the organ of thought and
judgement"

I have previously called non-spinal (educational) adjusting - PSYCHIC
(chiropractic) adjusting...

(The word psychic was used by the late WD Harper, DC in Anything Can Cause
Anything: A Correlation of Dr. DD Palmer's Principles of Chiropractic [3rd
ed., 1974]; and it appeared in my definition of chiropractic in Dorland's
Illustrated Medical Dictionary [1988, 1994, 2000])

According to Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary:

PSYCHIC: pertaining to the psyche or to the mind; mental [psyche - a Greek

meaning "the organ of thought and judgement"]

DD said, "'Interference' is not known in physiology."

BJ-"straight" chiros are still promoting "nerve interference"...

So Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida's Prof. David R. Seaman, DC
asks:

"Where is the nerve interference...[where is the interference with BJ's -
TDG] immeasurable mental impulse? Clearly, we need to rethink our use of

KEY POINT: When DD said, "'Interference' is not known in physiology"
[1910:978] - he was trying to steer the profession away from son BJ's

DD posited a spiritual diagnostic trick...

Innate - a spiritual force - always irritates the nervous system to cause

emanating from sensory receptors" [Guyton AH. 5th ed., 1976:608]

And according to anatomist Hollinshead [197_]:

"The basic function of the nervous system is to connect a receptor to an
effector organ." [W.H. Hollinshead. Textbook of Anatomy 3rd ed. Harper and
Row, p. 68]

D.D. stated the same concept:

"Nerves have but two functions - conveying
impulses outward and sensations inward." [Palmer DD. The Science, Art and
Philosophy of Chiropractic. Portland, OR: Portland Printing House Co.

D.D. openly indicated that all healing arts of his day employed a
diagnostic/treatment concept that was identical to his Innate
diagnostic trick...

"...[T]hat which knows much better how to mend a fractured bone the first
day of its life than the surgeon will ever know; that intellect which is
known as Hahneman's Vital Force; New Thought's Divine Spark; Hudson's
Subconscious Mind; the Allopath's Vis Medicatrix Naturae; the healing
power
of nature...[is the same as - TDG]...D.D. Palmer's Innate Intelligence..."

"INNATE - born with...I would not change it except to replace it
with...the Christian's God...the Hebrew's Helohim, the Mahometan's

(This last quote seems to me DD's subtle attempt to adjust what might be
called "The God Subluxation" - to wit - everyone thinking THEIR God is THE
God and as a consequence they will prevail in war - or - my favorite right
here in the good ol' USA - that a given God will help one set of believers
win a football game against another set of believers!)

Oddly (at least to me)...

"[T]he physical...includes the psychic, the soul...the bond of union
between
spirit and body..." [DD Palmer 1910:497]

Which reminds me...

Dorland's 29th edition defines spirit as "liquid": 1. any volatile or
distilled liquid. 2. a solution of volatile material in alcohol...

This aspiritual "liquid" Dorland's definition of spirit reminds me..

DD said:

"To be sure, Chiropractic may be practiced without a knowledge
of...[Innate-Soul-Body]...but, why not know what your business if founded

DD's INNATE (SPIRITUAL) DIAGNOSTIC TRICK...

DD advised (note: I'm LOOSELY paraphrasing DD via WD Harper's Anything Can
Cause Anything):

ASSUME Innate is irritating the nervous system trying to cause health...

If the patient is sick - something ELSE - something
identifiable/diagnosable - is irritating the nervous system to cause
disease...

FIRST identify and adjust mech/chem/psychic subluxations in the external
environment.

SECOND identify and adjust subluxations in the internal environment;
keeping
in mind the possibility that external environmental irritation has altered
the internal environment to cause it to noxiously irritate ITSELF via:

a) secondary MECHANICAL irritants ("vertebral subluxations");

b) secondary CHEMICAL irritants (unsuitable ingesta or inappropriate
medications);

c) secondary PSYCHIC irritants ("mental impingements"/outside minds that
perpetuate a and b).

RB Livingston, MD alludes to these "secondaries" in the 1985 edition of
Best
and Taylor's
Physiologic Basis of Medical Practice:

"Aware of sensory physiology, you will readily retain the following
practical principles: First, many processes intervene between stimulation
of peripheral receptors and higher perceptual centers...There needs to be
a
leavening of self-doubt in the physician's mind as to the possibility of
as
yet unrecognized and as yet undiscovered sensory intrusions that may also
be
contributing influentially to the patient's perceptual experiences."

Again - if a person is diseased - something ELSE (besides Innate) - some
DIAGNOSABLE noxious
mechanical, chemical and/or psychic irritant - in the internal OR external
environment - is irritating the nervous system and may be
identified/diagnosed using a knowledge of the nervous system
(hence the current Dorland's definition of chiropractic: "a science of
applied neurophysiologic diagnosis...").
