well i had it done... it didnt *hurt* but it was very uncomfortable and made
me feel sick... she couldn't tell me how dilated i was as the cervix was facing to the back, but she did say it was thin. I go in to monitor the baby on saturday if nothing has started, then i go in on tuesday if nothing has happened to begin induction... *sighs* he just doesn't want to come out! Leanne. |

Frankly, I wouldn't agree to induction in your shoes unless there was some indication that the baby was doing poorly (more than one non-reassuring NST, for example) or that your health is declining (signs of pre-eclampsia, etc.). You can always say "No" to the induction, you know. He *will* come out eventually, after all. A *normal* pregnancy is 37-42 weeks long, so at 41w3d, it's not as if you've reached a point where it's remotely *dangerous* to wait for spontaneous labor. That said, if you *want* to be induced, make sure your Bishop's score is 7 or higher. If it's not, decline. -- Be well, Barbara Mom to Sin (Vernon, 2), Misery (Aurora, 4), and the Rising Son (Julian, 6) Aurora (in the bathroom with her dad)--"It looks like an elephant, Daddy." What is a bishop's score and how is it tabulated?

What is a bishop's score and how is it tabulated? It is an aggregate number measuring the mother's dilation, effacement, and the position and consistency of the cervix and of the baby's station. The higher the number, the better the chance that an induction will succeed. The lower the number, the better the chance that an induction will wind up in a c-section. This site shows you how the numbers are calculated: http://www.bestdoulas.com/bishop.htm. It also says the number should be 9 or higher, not 7 or higher. I think I misremembered! -- Be well, Barbara Mom to Sin (Vernon, 2), Misery (Aurora, 4), and the Rising Son (Julian, 6) Aurora (in the bathroom with her dad)--"It looks like an elephant, Daddy." Thanks, that helps a lot. Based on what my OB has told me my bishop score is around a 11-12. I guess that means my scheduled induction on May 7 will more than likely go well. I hope so anyway. Thanks for the info. It is an aggregate number measuring the mother's dilation, effacement, and the position and consistency of the cervix and of the baby's station. Frankly, I wouldn't agree to induction in your shoes unless there was some indication that the baby was doing poorly (more than one non-reassuring NST, for example) or that your health is declining (signs of pre-eclampsia, etc.). apart from what I've told you before about getting fluid, my blood pressure is up... thats why they want to induce. I don't *really* want it done, but i'm sort of looking forward to it as well... Oh, they also use the gels here... so you go in to hospital... and they put as many lots of gels in as you need before they induce... i just thought this was normal and they'd induce properly when your bishops score was high enough... or do other hospitals do it differently? Thanks, Leanne. |
