Weight gain question
Quinn had his 4-mo. wbv today. He didn't gain as much as we thought he
had -- about 3 lbs. since the 2-mo. visit, and weighs 16 lb. 8 oz. now. We thought he was probably around a pound heavier than that. Now, I want to stress that I'm not concerned that his weight gain is inadequate or anything like that -- he's totally healthy and doing great. But I'm aware that the weight charts reflect the data of both ff'ed and bf'ed babies, with the majority of the data coming from ff'ed babies. So what should a bfing mom be looking for in weight gain? -- Alpha alphawave at earthlink dot net |

Weight gain question
Link for preliminary charts for BF babies
http://www.promom.org/bf_info/growth.html I think that at the age your son is at now 4-8oz a week is average- but don't quote me on that. A healthy-looking baby :-) Seriously, take a look at the bf baby charts if you like, but it varies too much by individual baby for the charts to be all that much use, except in showing worrisome trends. A pound and a half per month is a perfectly fine gain. I forget what he weighed at birth, but he's certainly double the average-sized baby's birthweight, and more. (My son, who was 9 lbs. 5 oz., didn't double his birthweight until *much* later in his first year, so I wouldn't be surprised if at 4 months he was about where your son is.) None of my kids followed the "typical" breastfed-baby gain pattern anyway -- they were plumpish at first and then slimmed down, but they weren't really ever Buddha babies like some. --Helen |

He was 8 lb. 10 oz., so he's not far from doubling. Thanks for the reassurance on the weight gain. :-) -- Alpha alphawave at earthlink dot net |

Average weight gain for a bf baby of this age is about 2 pounds a month, but 1 1/2 pounds is just fine. (Anything under a pound a month is considered cause for concern.) (FWIW, bf babies tend to gain weight faster than ff babies in the early months, then slow down in the second half of the year.) But it sounds like he's doing great.
