Default questions about development - when do you worry?

Your kid isn't getting enough nutrition. She is obviously physically
inferior to her peers. Once she gets older you can measure how her mental
development has been retarded as well.

It's wise to ignore the advice and opinions of your doctor as well. What can
medical school contribute to a diagnosis when compared to the mindless
prattle of opinionated Usenet contributors?

My nearly 7 month old daughter Emily is still on ebm, but will have to

make
the switch to formula as our supply will be running out in a matter of

days.
All has seemed well, although she seems so small! Just the other day, a
friend of ours brought their 6 wk old over and he is 12 lbs. He started

out
the same weight as Emily, about 7.5 lbs. Emily is only 14 lbs... They

look
the same age side by side. Emily has not shown any interest in rolling,
crawling, etc. She HATES being on her tummy, so I don't leave her in that
position very long. She can sit if she is supported in her boppy, but

today
she fell out of the boppy and on to the floor from the couch while my
daughter was watching her. I felt awful. I yelled at my older daughter
while I tried to get Emily to stop crying. Emily loves to eat. She

drinks
plenty, and she loves to eat Gerber babyfood and anything that I mash up

at
home and feed her. She likes to stand with our help, reaches for objects,
etc. She sleeps through the night almost every night. She seems happy,

and
the ped says she is taking after her small parents - I'm 5'2" and my

husband
about 5'7".

Still, I am starting to get concerned...

Can anyone ease my fears or make a reccomendation?

Thanks
Betsy

Maybe it is time to take her out of the boppy and let her learn how to
sit and move for herself? On the floor. Helping her sit is sure to
delay her learning to sit.

absolutely, it so happens that the age my children were learning to sit was
between christmas and new year, so the both got hours and hours of sitting
on the floor with someone very close by, whilst staying at my parents, we
did have to put a cushion behind one of them when we got home, but we never
fully supported either of them.

The ped is talking nonsense. Infant weight has not much to do with
final adult heigh. Final adult height depends in large part on
nutritional status throughout childhood and at what age the person
stops growing taller.

surely genetics has a huge part to play as well? my dad and aunt grew up
together so presumably had the same nutrition, they both had puberty at
normal times and taking the normal length of time, my dad came out 5'7" and
my aunt at 6', it seems clear that my dad took after the side of the family
that was mostly short and my aunt took after the other side of the family.

Also, on my mums side of the family, we are now on at least the 4th
generation of being a good size at birth, getting smaller over the first
year being small in childhood and then becoming average at puberty (well we
are only part of the way in to the 4th generation, but everything is fitting
the pattern so far).

I know that birth weight has no correlation with adult height, but I think
that providing the BMI is in the normal range for age and sex that some
corrolation must start emerging, I suspect that it's fair to say that the
ped is only partially right, rather than talking nonsense. I presume he's
been taking other measurements and all those are fine.

Cheers

Anne

Thanks for everyone's reply. It's silly, that if I didn't have anyone else
to compare to or these "growth charts", Id never have been concerned at all.
I believe she is just fine, but especially after the feedback here.
