Is it true that the purpose of "Baby on board" signs on cars is to
alert rescue and medical personnel that an infant is in the car, in
the event the driver of that car causes a serious accident?

Something, something, Burt Ward...

Baby on board, how I've adored,
That sign on my car's windowpane
A bounce in my step; loaded with pep,
'Cause I'm driving in the carpool lane.

Call me a square; friend, I don't care
That little yellow sign can't be ignored
I'm telling you it's mighty nice
Each trip's a trip to paradise
With my baby on board.

With Baby #1, we got a "baby on board" thing. DH said that the only
way he would use it was if he got another one that said, "Something,
something Burt Ward."

Hence, it was never in our car. DD plays with it.

On a side note, the local Health Department recently told me parents

should
use a permanent marker to write their child's name, birthday, allergies,

etc
on the side of the car seat that is beside the door. That way, if there
were an accident and the parent was unconscious, the rescue workers have
basic information on the baby. I thought that was a great idea.

Here in Florida they have stickers for the side of the car seat with all the
vital information on it. Really great since you can put several emergency
numbers, and it goes with the car seat if Grandma's driving one day.

I never thought of them as anything other than a cute sign that says the
driver has a baby in the car.

I thought the best thing to do with them would be to wear one to let people
know you're pregant.
