Fifth Disease - oh yeah!
Charlotte came home from school Wednesday afternoon looking like she'd been
slapped in the face. I had no idea what it was till the school nurse called Thursday morning and said she was the 3rd student from her class to go to the nurse that morning and it's Fifth Disease. It's going around all the base elementary schools apparently. As soon as she said it I said "I'm pregnant" she said "Oh that's not good". So I called my Dr who said to get to the lab and give blood. Apparently he says it's very rare to find an adult anywhere who wasn't exposed as a kid. So the first test will be to see if I've had it, which he thinks I will have. If not, the second test is, am I infected? Even if I haven't been exposed before, it doesn't automatically mean I'll be infected. Then the chances of anything being wrong gets narrowed down more and more. It causes anemia in the baby apparently. What do they do for that? He only knows of one case of a birth defect and they can only guess it was from the Fifth Disease. If I was earlier along the worry would be miscarriage. So I personally feel fine. I feel I'm far enough along to not be worried. The Dr said pretty much positively Patrick and Lewis will get it. I kinda doubt it cos we get tons of supposedly super contagious things (like pink eye) and only one kid will get it. But at least they'll have been exposed which I guess is good in the long run. So anyone else been exposed to Fifth Disease while pregnant? What did you have to do and what happened in the end? Thanks, Sophie #4 due 7/18/04 |

Oh no! I was wondering how you were doing lately. Yikes yikes, but at
least the chances of getting it are low and the risk to the baby isn't big. I hope the rest of the kids stay clear of it. Were you at the hospital yesterday for the blood test or for Charlotte? Mary S. |

Apparently you don't to do anything for the kid(s), it just runs its course. I was actually offline cos something happened to the computer - lol. Trust me, I would have been on here sooner to ask about it if the computer was okay |
