I can tell you that my daughter has been similar to yours, and it's
driven me crazy. Has she ever been admitted?

No.

Because whether they're
wheezing or not, they don't do much more in the hospital, in my
experience.

They said if they admitted her, it would be to give her racemic epi, for
which they would have to closely monitor her.

Wow. She must have atypical asthma. My daughter's never had epi, and
on her first admission, after she was more 'stable', they told me she
had been under a minute away from pulmonary arrest. So I can't
imagine being told the next step was epi, then going home!

No wonder you were so frustrated and concerned -- they've been saying
things that are, to the layperson, as you said, scarily contradictory.

Has she had a chest xray during this illness? It could be pneumonia,
maybe.

Yes. It was clear.

That's great. It sounds like the allergist was helpful. Good luck!

Tina.

My asthma has been better in recent years and I believe one
important reason is that I'm eating flax oil for omega-3
essential fatty acids (EFA's). EFA's are used by the
body to make prostaglandins. A deficiency of omega-3
can lead to more inflammation -- including I believe
inflammation of the lungs, i.e. asthma.

Other food sources of omega-3 include fish, walnuts and
pecans.

I believe antioxidant vitamins help, too.
(vitamin C, E, and beta-carotene)
though I don't see remarkable effects of
vitamin C on my asthma as with my cold symptoms.
And I'm also taking quercitin, a bioflavonoid,
in the belief that it may be helping my asthma.

Why is asthma more common these days?
Air pollution? Pesticides? Lack of nutrients in food?
Trans-fatty acids? Vaccinations? A combination
of the above? Something else?

Can I just say, our pediatric allergist said on our first visit that he
really didn't think our then almost-3 yr old had allergies triggering his
respiratory problems, because of the same age issue you mention. He ate
his words and apologized PROFUSELY when my son's skin tests were almost
ALL strongly positive.

My own asthma allergy issues were not caught until I was about 7, but
I don't think it was because that's when they started. In my case, my
mom noticed that I seemed to be 'sick' with a runny stopped up nose
and missed a lot of kindergarten, but that no one else in the family
got the 'colds' from me. So when I was tested, I turned out to be
allergic to animal dander, ragweed, trees, grass, mold, kapok, etc.

So I suspect that the asthma may not be diagnosed until the kids are
in school and that's why the allergist may think that's when they
start.

Also cold air could trigger wheezing and maybe I just didn't run
around in the cold air much until I went to school.
