Default One hour Glucose test numbers...HELP!

Does anyone know what the numbers for normal should be for the one hour
glucose test?

I am having my test tomorrow morning and want to knwo since they never
would tell me with my last pregnancy...I failed both tests 1 and 3 hour
last pregnancy but my sugar numbers were always well within the range my
Diabetic doctor wanted them to be..She also told me maybe the glucose
was too much for my system and therefore just couldn't pass the
tests....Thanks for any help on this I feel I need to know ahead of time
for my piece of mind this time :-)

I'm currently being treated with insulin for gestational diabetes and all is
going well thankfully. I believe the number for the one hour test should be
under 140. I got a 179 and went on to fail the three hour test at every
interval.

I would eat as much protein as possible before having the test, and go
out for a long walk after drinking that gunk until it's time for them to
actually test you; both will help you metabolize such an artificial
quantity of glucose. If you have diabetes and are being tested regularly
and your diabetes specialist considers your numbers to be fine, why are
you even having to take this test? Is is even safe for you to injest all
that stuff? How does your specialist feel about you taking this test?

I found your suggestion interesting. When I had my GTT, I was not
*permitted* to move about at all... and it was done after fasting.

Gee, no wonder I failed.

Well I'm not Diabetic....I was listed as Gestational Diabetic in my last
pregnancy...But noone would tell me what the numbers were for the
glucose tests....I had no special diet was not on insulin just checked
my blood 3-4 times a day and they were always normal, The diabetic
doctor also did blood work that shows something for like the past 4-6
months and it all came back normal....I just flunked the pregnancy
glucose tests...I know the stuff they make you drink makes me sick....As
to how safe it is I really am not sure which the greater risk is not
finding out if I have the gestational diabetes or doing the test....

Maybe I'm a little pushier than most, but while I'm waiting around in my
little gown and paper blanket, I TAKE my file and leaf through it,
particularly in order to read the lab sheets. It's your medical info,
you have the legal right to see it. Have a little notepad and pen in
your purse and write down the numbers you're interested in and look it
up on the internet.(ALthough most reports will list your number with the
"average" range listed right next to it, so a monkey could see if things
are out of range.) I figure I'm reasonably educated and intelligent, it
doesn't take a rocket scientist to read a lab sheet. And then you can
ask specific, informed questions while you're seeing your caregiver.
Don't ever let medical office staff put you off knowing specifics about
your own medical care, lab results, etc. That's the number one thing
that really gets mine and my husband's blood boiling - don't treat us
like we're too stupid to understand the specifics of our own medical
conditions.

They don't like me for a patient because I am constantly asking
questions etc...I don't know if it is just me they do this to, (at my
office) they will not leave mmy medical file laying anywhere someone
always has ahold of it. I tend to ask alot of questions, and it seems to
annoy them..They usually brush them off and hurry off...I'm running out
of choices of doctors in the rea too....The OB/GYN's I can go to on my
insurance are all in two practices and you have to see them all...I'm
going to try tomorrow to be rather pushy about it...Thanks for your
input and hopefully it works!

Every MD I've been to in years takes the chart out of the room
with them everytime they go. Granted, they leave in outside the
door where anyone else could pick it up or see my name, but they
sure don't leave it with me! But, yes, according to HIPAA, we
all have the right to see our own medical records at any time and
to have them copied for us if we desire.

For the OP, the cutoff for the 1 hour GCT (50 grams of CHO) is
140. The cutoffs for the 3 hour GTT (100 grams of CHO) are 95
fasting, 180 at 1 hour, 155 at 2 hours, and 140 at 3 hours.

I just took the 3 hour on Monday and was severely admonished for
drinking water during the test as it would "flush the sugar out
of my system"... anyone else have a similar experience, or were
you allowed to have water? It was a very long day after 12 hours
of fasting, 1 hour drive to the MD office, 3 1/2 hours of testing
with no food or water.

This seems ridiculously unsafe to me, to expect a preganat woman to go
so long without food and water. I know I'd be lightheaded and dehydrated
by the end. And isn't the point of the test to see how your body
metabolizes the glucose? In a normal situation, you would be eating and
drinking, therefore helping your body to digest everything you had taken
in. I don't understand how they expect your body to metabolize an
artifical amount of glucose in such an artificial setting and expect to
get a "normal" result.

Just for the record, though, some practitioners use
different cutoffs. Most use 140 for the one hour, but there
are at least three fairly commonly used sets of cutoffs
for the three hour.

Best wishes,
Ericka
