Default Thoughts on circumcision please

I am expecting my first DS at the end of August. My thoughts on getting
him circumcised was that I wouldn't because it serves no health benefit to
him. However, I just went out to a site that showed pics of adult men w/
intact foreskins and it raised a question of aesthetics in my mind. These
penises I looked at looked like elephants trunks. (snip. no pun intended.)

while i'm sure those men would be flattered indeed by the comparison, in
fact they look like penises.

Since stats show that there really is no large majority when it somes to
being circumsized or not, I don't imagine that there will be any kind of an
embarrassment later on. If you choose not to circumsize your son, he will be
far from the only one not circumsized among his peers.

At this point,
the only reason I would get it done is for aesthetic purposes and, to me,
that's not a real good reason. I just don't want my son being
self-conscious and embarrassed. Thanks for any input!

It's likely your son will find *something* about which to be
self-conscious and embarrassed regardless of your decision on this
issue. That's his job. :-)

Just make sure that you have solid, concrete
reasons for whatever you choose. Don't do
something just because that's what your husband
looks like, or because everyone does it a certain
way.

My friend had it done for her son, and the only reason she did it was
because his dad is done, AND she spends half her time knocking DH because
he's NOT done. She's never seen his, but just from general conversation,
mainly the conversation stemming from a warm summer night and sitting out in
the yard having a few beer.

Personally, I wouldn't want it done to me, nor
to my daughter, if I had one. Why would I do it
to my sons?

See, I didn't do it. She did, and she stayed with the baby in the room
while it was being done. Now, I hear, they do freeze and then do the
procedure, but I guess it must surely be a shock, as they do it any time
from right after baby is born up until 10 days of age. Friend was told that
after that age, a baby becomes more aware of pain. Quite frankly, I'm
sure a baby is capable of feeling pain before birth, but then again, I
really don't know for sure and have nothing to back that up either way.
Friend said that the circumcision was the worst experience she's gone
through, and someone who is so deadset ON circumcision said herself that if
she knew then what she knows now, she would not have done it. I was lucky
(or unfortunate) enough to hear the whole story on how it's done... The rods
shoved around, the cutting, the full blown, play-by-play on it, and to be
honest, I sat listening to her like she was telling be of a horrible,
horrible accident down the street.

Plus, penises are funny-looking anyway. My
kids will be taking martial arts as soon as
they can. No one will be making fun of them,
regardless.

I said that above somewhere as well. No matter what, I do think they're
funny looking, and always have, probably always will!
My brothers and I took martial arts when we were younger... No one f***ed
with us! LOL

Not circumcising is getting more and more common, so I don't think he
will "stick out," so to speak. :-)

Anyway, as you admit, aesthetics is a poor reason for mutilating a
healthy and useful body part. If he thinks it looks funny, he can have
it done himself--and I'm betting there are not too many adult men out
there who would opt for that.

I have three sons and had the first two circumcised, and I regret it so
much.

It's a $2K+ operation if you do it later. I think many insurances will
cover the cost if you do it right after birth. Just something else to
keep in mind.
