Study finds strict parenting can lead to overweight kids

CHICAGO - "Clean your plate or else!" and other authoritarian approaches
to parenting can lead to overweight children, a new study finds.

Strict mothers were nearly five times more likely to raise tubby
first-graders than mothers who treated their children with flexibility
and respect while also setting clear rules.

But while the children of flexible rule-setting moms avoided obesity,
the children of neglectful mothers and permissive mothers were twice as
likely to get fat.

"The difference between the different parenting groups is pretty
striking," said the study co-author, Dr. Kay Rhee of Boston University
School of Medicine. The study of 872 families appears in the June issue
of Pediatrics, released Monday.

Rhee speculated that parents who show respect and warmth within a
framework of rules may help their children learn to make good decisions
about food and exercise. Or it could be that strict parents create a
stressful household where overeating becomes a comfort and escape, she said.

Other studies have shown the flexible parenting style, also called
authoritative, has other good results for children such as higher
achievement in school and lower incidence of depression, said John
Lavigne, chief psychologist at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Lavigne, who was not involved in the new study, said most parents can
learn a different way of handling their children.

"Some parents might have difficulty changing their style. But a lot of
other parents are very amenable to change, if they only have the right
kind of advice," Lavigne said. ...

receptors than people with normal weight................other studies
have found a link between failure to breastfeed and body

I drank a lot of soft drinks as a kid.

I was skinny.

But then I didn't sit in front of a TV all day either.

And went out for sports, as well as doing heavy ranch and farm work.

I'd have to say there certainly was a neurobiological link to my
skinniness. I thought I wanted to do the fun things I was doing and
thought TV was for people that had nothing to do. And were stupid.

I still do.

I haven't watched TV for going on 7 years now.

You, no the other hand, I see as the fat slop observer, sitting on your
ass running sound bite commentary on things you are too ignorant and
stupid about to converse in actual debate.

Proclamations, just like the talking heads on TV.

Don't care.

Don't eat any of those kinds of foods. Grow my own. Cook my own.
Wouldn't deep fry, or pan fry ('cept eggs), and you fat boys are funny
to watch try to heave yourself up off your butts once a week.

But obviously 'o'OM has a problem of not being able to find his chair
after it sticks to his fat ass.

And it's not government pushin', it's those nosy biddybodies, Doctors
and health experts.

Part of society USING the government as it was intended. Now get out

emphasis on public health in america comes and goes...............when
things are going fine, public heath takes a backseat to other
issues...............when there seems to be a problem on the horizon,
interest in pubic health picks up................the focus of public
health are redefined with each upswing in concern..................the
present fears are a loss of bragging rights if the current generation
of american children doesn't live to be as old as their parents and an
aging population that will bankrupt medicare.................
